30D and 70-200 f/2.8 performance at high ISO's is awesome. After being initially disappointed with photos taken in poor lighting I'm amazed at the IQ of these shots. Now if I could just do my part ;)

Here are two shots from the game this afternoon. Our rink is outdoors and I started shooting at ISO 400. The rink lights were on and as the sun set I gradually increased the ISO to 1600 and then 3200.

(Small jpeg's lose a lot - the originals are much nicer)

ISO 1600

ISO 3200

Thanks for looking,
Dan
(mourning the Habs loss...)

PS: Hockey history buffs - google 'Desson' and 'NHL' ;)

Nice job, gotta love the iso performance of the 30D. Only comment i can make is these might look better with a tighter crop. What was the temp when you finished shooting?

Gee, it's been a while since I've seen organized hockey on an outdoor rink... think I'm getting a little misty!

Thanks for the comments. I didn't do very much PP on these - almost straight from the camera. DPP->jpeg defaults.

I chose these shots not because they are the best hockey action but because of the noise and grain. Even a 100% crop is quite clear. I'm going to print a few of the shots after I finish PP. That's something I've never attempted with high ISO shots.

I think you will find that at the higher ISO's it is important to get the exposure correct and on the 30D you are much better off slightly overexposing than underexposing (with respect to grain). If you read some threads here on indoor basketball with poor lights -lots of people talk about this

Being a former defenseman - I like to body checking shot!!!

good shots. nice timing.

I agree - properly exposed shots at ISO3200 are just fine.

It was warm last night - mid 20's. Perfect hockey weather ;)

Thanks David for all your help.

These aren't the best of the group but are two that demonstrated decent IQ at high ISO.

This is one more shot at 3200. I think the exposure is correct but the shooter is in a shadow. I'm still amazed by the clarity and sharpness. Not the greatest hockey photos but it certainly isn't because the equipment isn't capable. (f/2.8, 1/1000, ISO 3200 70-200L at 70)

Good shots, that ISO perf. is great. We have one outdoor rink in my area as well, but I haven't been able to shoot at it yet. The photo in the most recent post is cool, shows some good action, puck trying to be slid across.

I wish I could agree with everyone else. My computer isn't allowing me to see your first two shots. I do like the 3 one that you put up later in the posting.

Keep up the good shots Dan!
