Just curious why it seems like everyone needs to say "No duck but..." or "new lens, mandatory duck photo included" with every new lens thread on this board. It's just something I don't understand why it must be the "Donald" of every lens conversation here. How did this come to be?

Yeah ducks are in the water, yeah they move about 1 mile a year on land when they walk but still, it sort of belittles the actual people who spend countless hours taking the most magnificent images of ducks. Sort of like saying that their photography is equivalent to the sample shots we take with a new lens of the garbage on our desk. (c'mon fess up, tell me you never did that before :|)

Maybe its me, maybe I like to take pictures of ducks on a nice summers day in the park. This just seems silly to me. Is it only me?

Does anyone else feel/wonder the same thing about this Donald duck exposure?

I could look at duck pics all day and not get bored. I am glad the tradition is ducks and not newspaper prints!

Some say that it is the detail in the feathers that provide a good test base for lens testing by showing a clear example of resolving power with a 100% crop.

I guess its because they are relatively easy to find and photograph, allowing a common comparison with a farmiliar subject.

I'd prefer to see a nice duck than an arbitrary photo of desk junk or a car in a road...?

Its not meant to belittle or ridicule nature photogs and I'm sure they do try to get slightly more original images anyway.

And i found those ducks or goose only in Europe where i travelled, i can say that Gulls and pigeons are the most birds easy to find than ducks everywhere.

How about detail in the beak with a 100% crop? :)

I think it's just tradition around here.

Also I guess a duck is a good subject to check the lens out because of the details (feather, etc.) and contrast (especially on ducks with dark AND white feathers!), etc...

I have never taken a pic of a duck. I'm sure they are around somewhere in NYC, but I am just too lazy to go find them!

And yes, I will admit to taking pics of "garbage" on my desk!:):):)

You know, I get home from work, it's dark and cold outside. What am I to do?

Well...I do chase around my 3 cats (just added the third last week).

They hate me now...

I come back from work afternoon, then eat my lunch then either sleep or stay online till midnight and i don't go out at all, only once or 2 times a week i go to clubs or around for dinner.
I am a civil engineer and i go to fields alot so that i feel very lazy later, even the beach which is beside our house i don't go.
really i feel very lazy, when i get 300 then i go out for about 1-2 weeks happy with new lens then back again to laziness and looking for 400 or 600 and again same story repeated.

I find that a good TEMPORARY cure is a new L lens!
Ha Ha Ha!!!

Tareq, you are running out of cures!!!

But man, if I had a beach right outside my house...well let me think about that for a moment.

Yeah, you are right...I'd be too lazy to go out there since it's ALWAYS out there!!!

Nothing there in beaches rather than sands and endless water of the sea, what i can do with those two? shoot sand and water only?
I am worry about my cameras (even those weather sealing can't beat salts).

Guess the breed of this duck...

Ducks are characters and I agree with the tradition here.

Something is wrong with your lens. Contact Canon and send your lens to me so that I can properly dispose of it for you. :) Great shot!
