we use these in the film business, u can get them in single (1/2 stop light reduction), double (full stop light reduction). in sizes 18"x24", 2'x3', 4'x4', 6'x6',these are called flags, 8'x8', 12'x12', 20'x20' frames. the bigger ones usually used overhead to reduce sunlight, and can be used with a diffusion material like silks,or gridcloth. sizes 6'x6' and up come as frames you put together and then tie the rag on. the smaller frames are rigid. and sown on rags so not interchangable. the smaller ones to cut and shape light. you can also tie on the bigger frames different types of reflective material and bounce sun light or hotlghts into for a large broad source, and yes you can also use them to stop down the background, but it robs detail and throws the background more out of focus.

I used to use "skrim" when I did laser light shows. Its a fabric called chefron. Im not sure if thats how your spell it but it was the material used parts of wedding dress. You can shoot lasers through many strips lined up in a row and projects the laser images on each piece.

If you double or triple it up it will have the same effect as the Californian Sunbounce systems. Im sure you could build your own for hundreds less.
