Having made the fatal mistake of holding one, I may be the proud owner of an EOS-1D Mark II N next week.

Apart from the banding issue at high ISOs when combined with AI servo, and potential autofocus mis-calibration, are there any other issues I should be aware of, or look for, when testing the body in-store?

Also, are non-Canon batteries a safe option? The original is around AUD 300, while I can get a similarly specced afterm-market one for almost a tenth of the price. Do you know of any reputables brands/sites to buy them from?

Thanks, folks :)

bannedPermanent ban

a few things:
Non canon batteries work, may even have more power, but I wouldn't trust them for weather sealing or a great fit. Black Diamond is suppose to be the best of the 3rd parties.

Check out this link for some tips on using it

PMA is right around the corner, and there may be a new model, so pricing, especially used for the 1d2n may fall.

Yes, the weather sealing would be the biggest issue. Then again, I could keep the original in the bag for when the thunderstorms and sandstorms break out.

Thanks for the tips and link, much appreciated. I am aware a new camera could be just around the corner, but doubt I can afford it. I'm getting almost 35% off 1DMk2N's retail price.

It's a great camera. I've never had any issues with banding.

Again, great camera and no experience with the issues you raised.

Looks like there is no issue specific to the 1DMk2N other than the infrequent banding? Reassuring :-)

Thanks for all your replies so far, I'll be watching this thread for any more infomation and experiences you may have to share.

think the banding happens on the 1d2 non-N as well, fairly random occuring as sometimes its there, sometimes not.

My 1DN will only band on underexposed, high ISO shots with a lot of shadow detail. If I nail the exposure it doesn't band at all. Not really a problem as far as I am concerned.

Ah, thanks for expanding on that. If banding occurs only under such circumstances, that would be no issue at all.

I am a three week old owner. Mine does band but only at 3200 ISO. Doesn't matter what focus option i ma using....the effect is pretty small, but I am not all that happy about it.

Other than that, the camera has been a trouper at 1600 ISO the past three weekends in the Gym....much better than my Nikon D200.

The 1D2N is a great camera and you'll love it. The only issue I'm having is that even when I want the focus point to be visible on the display when chimping (selectable in the camera menu), a lot of times the camera doesn't register the selected AF point and I can't physically see it on the display. In other words, it'll zoom in on the selected AF point, but it won't show red rectangle where focus was acheived. Wierd.

BTW, I'll add that some shots will display the AF point (in chimp mode), and some shots won't. Still wierd.

To 1D Mark IIn owners with banding issues, if it makes you feel any better, the 5D often shows moire with fabrics/hair...all these tools have their achilles heels....

I will say that the 5D is still one hell of a camera. I had a short lived love affair with it last year. I haven't experienced this noise on my 1D2N yet. I see it on my 1Dinosaur, but it's still not as bad as some samples I've seen.
