The 1D2N is a great camera and you'll love it. The only issue I'm having is that even when I want the focus point to be visible on the display when chimping (selectable in the camera menu), a lot of times the camera doesn't register the selected AF point and I can't physically see it on the display. In other words, it'll zoom in on the selected AF point, but it won't show red rectangle where focus was acheived. Wierd.

BTW, I'll add that some shots will display the AF point (in chimp mode), and some shots won't. Still wierd.

I don't know if it's related, but on my 30d if I use Cfn.4-1 or 4-3 and I press once to focus, the red focus point won't show on the LCD when chimping.

If I hold the focus button while taking the shot, it will show.

Kav.

I got my 1D Mark IIn 1 week ago, so far no banding issues for me, but my ex-30D had some banding problem.

If you can heal yourself from 1-series curse before you get it then DO IT as soon as possible, the worst didn't come yet, wish if it is only holding or touching 1-series, that touch will cost you alot alot alot, so listen to me and go to a Nikon Doctor.;)

Hmmm.... I'll have to experiment with that. You may be on to something.

ISTR this also occurs if you want to view the AF point in ZB/Eos Utilities/DPP. It's due to your not having the focus point selected/active when you actually take the picture. Since it's not active, it's not recorded as being what you used to focus.

No bizarre issues with my 1Dmk2N to report. Very satisfied with the performance.

BTW, you are absolutely right about not being able to see the selected AF point in ZB EX either.

The AI Servo banding is a lens issue. Canon has a list of lenses and the main PCB part numbers that feed noise back into the body.

The 5D also gets hit by this.

Having made the fatal mistake of holding one, I may be the proud owner of an EOS-1D Mark II N next week.

Apart from the banding issue at high ISOs when combined with AI servo, and potential autofocus mis-calibration, are there any other issues I should be aware of, or look for, when testing the body in-store?

Also, are non-Canon batteries a safe option? The original is around AUD 300, while I can get a similarly specced afterm-market one for almost a tenth of the price. Do you know of any reputables brands/sites to buy them from?

Thanks, folks :)

Congrats, I've got to wait until April (pay rise with at work) to get mine:evil:

I know it'll be worth the wait but still, I'm almost counting the days. Currently using Nikon D200. Don't feel I can sell the camera until I've got the D1 mk II to replace it.

Ah man, you learn something new every day here. I've NEVER seen my selected AF point whenever I decide to chimp. Never thought anything about it, so I didn't realize it was possible. I use CF 4.1 and typically always let off the focus button when capturing images, except when using AI Servo and tracking the subject.

I did always want to know why I couldn't see the select AF point in ZB though... thanks guys!

Couple of DSLRs, number of lenses and other stuff... plenty short on talent.

I have had the camera about a year and so far no banding issues. I do have a tough time keeping the sensor clean though. I moved up from the gawdawful 10D.

large cash outlay but worth every penny. I really love the camera and it was great to buy a NEW camera that is the top of the line for action, sports fashion etc.

It does take some getting used too, but if you have used or owned other Canon SLR's or DSLRs you won;t be too lost. I did get a grid screen and installed it too. For extra batteries unless you shoot massive amounts of images, get factory. Aftermarket will void that very valuable warantee should you need it.

You will find that SI and several other mags publish setting guidelines for this camera.

Have fun and good luck,

Les Baldwin
