Just purchased the Canon S3. I am interested in a lens adaptor and filter to protect the camera lens. I see that the lens adaptors come in 52mm and 58mm. Which would be the best to purchase? I will probably be purchasing wide angle and tele converter lens in the future. When you get into these additional lens is one size (52mm or 58mm) have an advantage over the other?

Tedd

I'd recommend going to www.lensmateonline.com (external link) they answer a lot of those questions. I bought a 52mm adapter for my S2 because my wife bought it for me and that's what she was recommended. They have a good FAQ section and describe the different lenses available with test shots.

Now that's a real answer to Tedd's question!

"I bought the smaller size 52mm I think for my S2."

"I also bought the raynox WA and Tele from Lensmate as well."

Hey, I was first to answer the OP's original question. No points for that?

Ponts awarded! I just hope your follow up hasn't cause OP to drop his/her S3 off at the nearest Goodwill, and order a new DSLR arsenal ! :D

Hopefully not ;) , all this talk of DSLR's got my mind thinking again as well but I think I'd prefer to go with a D50 if I could find one or a 30D but then again, my wife told me that before I buy any equipment, I have to perfect the S2 first... boy, I'm never going to upgrade :(

Well the same thing happened to me. That's why I brought it up.
I speak from experience.

Seriously though. I don't believe that there is a better P&S on the market than the S2 or S3. If that's all you need then it's a great buy. The add on lenses...not so much IMHO.

I truly enjoy the dialog on this forum. I have learned so much in a short time by checking in nearly everyday. I have not found a more informative and friendly forum on the net. Thanks everyone! :D

All I know is that my bag weighed 5lbs with the S2, WA converter, Tele converter, three adapters, batteries and filters.

My new set up in the exact same back pack weighs 6.16. That's how I arrived at 1.6 more.

The 17-85 lens weighs 2 lbs, not 3, but then that's not a "kit" lens. My Sigma 17-70 only wieghs half that. My 70-300 IS weighs less than 2 lbs.

The XTi comes with the 18-50 lens as the kit lens which weighs 1 lb.

The total weight of the XTi with a kit lens is only 2lbs according to Amazon.com.

The S2 weighs 14.6 oz. Add an adapter an either tele or WA converter and your very near the 2lb weight of the XTi with a kit lens.

Yes, carrying a bag can give you a sweaty back, if you don't take it off once in awhile. But again, these issues don't bother me as much as the quality of the images and capability of the camera.

Stop shouting please! Also, accept the simple and obvious fact that a dslr with at least 2 lenses will weigh considerably more than an S3IS. It doesn't take the intellect of Albert Einstein to work that one out. I haven't got the intellect of Albert Einstein, but I do have both sets of kit as you can see from my signature, thus I can pick them up and therefore I know. I would also point out to you that I quoted my 400D + 17-85 weighs 3lbs,(both of them, together) so why are you "shouting" to me that the 17-85 weighs 2lbs, not 3? It might help if you took the time to read the facts before going off on one. There isn't much point carrying on with this line of "conversation" if you can't comprehend the written word is there?

I got the 58mm and related filters and other stuff.

The entire purchase experience can be found here:

Quite satisfied with the 58mm, and the only vignetting is with two filters stacked and hood.

And my total S3 experience can be found here too:

Wow!
I was just stating the weights that Amazon shows on their web site.
Shouting? I thought upper case was shouting. Oh well. Have a nice day! ;)

This section of the forum is dedicated to "compact digital cameras by Canon", but I think threads like this one would make any new compact owner think twice before asking for a little simple advice. He asked for advice as to which adapter to buy for his new Canon S3, and he gets a drawn out debate about how much DSLR cameras and lenses weigh. My guess is that he couldn't care less about the weight of those cameras and lenses. :(

I'd guess you were right. The OP was given a misinformed lecture relating to dslrs, when he'd just bought an S3 and my original reply was to support his decision and reassure him that he didn't need one, his purchase was a good one.

Thanks for your help. I thought there might be an advantage with one size over the other with the operation of the camera. It appears that there must not be.

I too was deciding which Lensmate, and after reading these posts...I decided on the 52mm... if I ever decide to buy a DSLR some day...I would still keep this camera as a backup...so the filter size really didn't make a difference in the end.

Just that there would be a better chance that your 58 MM filters would interchange with more of the lenses of your new SLR. (I think)
