The Canon S3's manual recommends the 58mm adapter, possibly because there is a danger of vignetting with the smaller filter size with some addon lenses, particularly if they're stacked. I bought the Canon original, which I believe is only available in 58mm, because Lensmate adapters aren't sold in the UK.
I have been mulling over a teleconverter too, but I wonder what improvements one will actually bring, bearing in mind that the telephoto range of the S3 is already pretty good. They add softness to the edges of the frame and increase the effects of camera shake. Would a 1/1.7 crop in practice be almost as good as a 1.7 tc?

I guess anytime you add an extender lens, you loose a certain amount of sharpness, but with the Canon 1.5 tele converter, it is ever so slight. No, you can't crop to match the quality of this lens. That would be the same as using digital zoom, and no matter what some may say, this lens is not the same as digital zoom. There may be other tele converters that are just as good, or even better, I'm not sure, but personally I am very happy with the quality of the Canon 58 MM adapter, and the TC-C58B lens.

I have both the 52 and 58. I leave the 52 and a UV on all the time and only use the 58 with my Sony 1.7x teleconveter lens. My filters, polarizer, and ND are all 52mm since that is the adapter I use most of the time.
