If Canon had not written such a stupidly worded and ambiguous statement into the owner's manuals, everyone would not be guessing the hotshoe is not protected to 250v!

"Also, do not connect to the camera's PC terminal any flash unit requiring 250v or more. Do not attach a high-voltage flash unit on the camera's hot shoe. It might not work."
