Just got this lens this afternoon. My copy was front focusing, so I had to micro adjust 18+ on 5dmk2 and 1dmk4. After micro adjusting, it is pretty sharp. Is this normal for this lens that needs 18+ MA?
I am not sure I should send it back to get a replacement or just keep. I've never had to MA for other lens I have. (including 50L)

I would say, no. I will also say that when I first got mine, it was back focusing quite a bit. I sent to Canon and it came back sharp as the devil himself. No MA needed. And it really only took 3 days, round trip.

Food for thought.

Thanks. That is what I thought. I am sending back to Adorama for exchange.

I did more testing today before sending my lens back. I noticed when I shoot close to MFD I need 18+ MA. When I am further away from my subject I only need 5+ MA.
This this common for this lens? I am shooting wide open and stopping down doesn't make any difference. I was wondering if this is characteristic of this lens or not.

The wife took the 35mm to the Georgia Aquarium the other day and got this wonderful shot with our son.

If I were you and have been in the same boat, send it to canon for calibration. It will be about the same amount of time as it would take to get replaced. There is nothing wrong with your lens, it just isn't perfectly matched to your body and may need a slight adjustment. If you return it, you could be in the same boat all over again.

Just my two cents
