On the other hand, English is not an easy language, if you are not born into it.

I agree it's not an easy language, but why are Americans the worst at using it?

Ebonics and teh. Differences in words as mentioned above. Punctuation and capitalization. People that don't break things into separate paragraphs! I wont even read a post if it is half a page long and not split up.

Me too - and I know the differences. But sometimes when I go back and look at my previous posts I have to groan because my fingers typed one thing while I was thinking another (that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

That annoys me too. I have done it a number of times and almost always edit my post to correct it. :o

I thought if I used words such as "bokeh" I would be considered a pro ,:) Oh forget it, I would also have to get a black camera with a white lens, Now I'm depressed :(
Gotta find my credit cards.

What really helps, is once you casually drop the word Bokeh, is that you stop to explain its exotic origins, and whatnot.

Another Word.

Chimping.

Sorry, but smelling my own rear and eating my relatives fleas sounds a lot like chimping. Making use of your Digital LCD, is just smart.

CurtisN.....I call it part of the "Short Cycle Evolution".
I graduated from High School in 1957. I had a reasonable grasp of my language and some personal values instilled by my family/society. Certain things were expected of you according to your age. Self discipline was a normal part of growing up.

It started to unravel when the family support/ learning cycle was broken up by the need for "Two person income" just to maintain the material status deemed necessary by advertising and media. "Earn and Spend" became the order of the day.

My pet hate on this forum is the use of the word "Distracting" but I have already vented my spleen here (or hear ;) )

I think life is more complicated. Two of my best friends, Steve and Claire, both have big jobs and they have three kids who all see perfectly fine and happy. They work less for money, tho' they earn a lot, and more for the challenge and self expression. They are not so dumb that they can't see through 'advertising' influence and the emptiness of a material driven lifestyle. There are always exceptions to every assumption.

Hmmm, is tracting a word I wonder, minus the prefix dis? So, commenting on a shot without something 'distracting' in it, such as 'nice bokah, tho' I find the subject distracting' becomes 'tracting shot. Thanks for sharing'.

Ah, the joys of the english language and how the internet has influenced the way we say things.

In the UK we have a TV advert for Yell (the old Yellow Pages), without going into describing the full ad suffice to say that one character is supposed to be American and the other English ~ the American says to the Englishman "what are trousers, can't you use english and call them pants...." (I think that is the way it goes). Well, again we are two nations divided by one language - trousers has its origins in old English and pants I think has its origins in the French pantaloons.

Before I get on a soapbox moment and sticking with the OP question - the thing that really gets me is how the heck did normality become normalcy. or have I gone off topic because I am sure that has not been on POTN but spoken by many politicians from across the pond.

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p
