IMHO...I hate that. Because everyone KNOWS that HUMBLE should NEVER be part of that equation....say IMO if you HAVE to but IMHO really means: "I'm right and only saying I'm humble so that you'll read what I just wrote but you are wrong & dumb if you disagree"

  (okay, you wanted to know what grates on us...)

That's magic Ronald. Thanks. But what if the French where to use the same word? Would the accent make it more acceptable ... almost romantic? Maybe the Italians would say it passionately and so it would become acceptable too. Or, the Finns could say it in a bonkers way and order would be restored in the universe. I wonder what it is about how the British say it?

Myself ... I hate it when AmeriKans say things like 'plain' annoying ... as distinct from what? Ornate annoying? Outlandish annoying? Garish annoying? Weird AFAIC  and annoying.

Haven't heard people of other origins use the word in the sense that I see many British using it. They do, then?

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it; it's just that it annoys me. I will admit, though, that hearing american people saying "whatever" or "dude" or "like", or anything along those lines is quite annoying, and I generally don't use those words. I'll admit to saying something like "that's just plain annoying". I suppose it's how I emphasize that "annoying" is the only way to describe it. Not ranting about how awful and what not, but "just plain annoying". In all seriousness, I can't think off the top of my head how else I'd phrase such a thing.

Again, I don 't mean to say that any of these things are somehow wrong (although some are, grammatically). I'm sure the quirks of us Americans are just as annoying as you bloody brilliant Brits. ;-)a No offense intended to anyone.

I just hate it when people mispell words on purpose.

I hate it when people misspell the word "misspell".

What on earth does "my bad" mean? Is that English? That should rate fairly highly on the annoyance scale.

I agree, Roy. It's the well..."other" way of saying "my mistake". I know that you knew that, but well...you know. ;-)a

I love this stuff!!! :D I'm not sure if everyone on this side of the pond will be so open to these things being pointed out, but I'd like to hear what other kind of stereotypes all of you non-Amerikans have of us... Egotistical rednecks? What else? I work with a number of people who are new to this country and I enjoy doing my best to be a stereotypical American - for fun. So bring it on, what do we do that makes your roll your eyes & mumble 'idiots!"? :D I'm not trying to start a flame war, just having fun.

To start with, we have the "World" Series of baseball... When a football team wins the Super Bowl, they are referred to as "World" champions... :p

I'm not sure how serious you were, but it is a good point. Even in fun, it's at best a gray area. I edited my post.

Hmmm!! the reference to being World champions used amuse and annoy me until I learned that its origins were associated with a newspaper (correct me if have recalled this wrongly) called the World Sun. So with a delightfully parochial abbreviation the USA gets its "World" champions ;)

The answer is historical, BB. After the First World War, the U.S. President of the day declared he wanted a return to Normalcy, namely a return to conditions as they were before the war. The word then became synonymous with domestic policy and partly legitimated the foreign policy of isolationism between the wars.

Thanks for pointing this out. I have done quick Googling and see its origins are almost as old as normality but significantly normalcy is only in (slightly) more common usage in the USA and normality rules on this side of the pond

Box Brownie, of all the sig lines I've seen, I think you have the best! I love it!!!

There is a What the Duck cartoon (and t-shirt now) where someone is telling him "Your camera takes nice pictures." He replies with "your mouth makes nice compliments." :D
