To improve your skills in portraits like this you should look at many, many other captures of photographing people. Try using a plain background. The brush or twigs are very busy and detract attention from the little cutie. Also, avoid bright areas around the frame of the photo, your eye constantly wants to go there because it's the brightest spot in the image.

If you have photoshop I would crop a little off the top and put a vingette on it. Great pic! And like everyone said you will have a great model!!! Apart from more careful framing- I think it's slightly underexposed. I think you're camera may have been fooled here (but I'm not sure why). Check out the histogram when shooting portraits like this or take the shot in RAW and you can adjust slightly afterwards. Overcast days are the best for portraits but they can sometimes be dull so carefull observation of the background and exposure is important. Alan
