In my honest opinion, I would get the 5D for the FF. I know the 5D doesn't have speed but, the 30D will do the job for sports, events, etc. I just got my 5d and I'm in love. If you really want the speed and don't mind the 1.3 crop on the Mark II N than go for it. The Mark II N is not in my needs for what I do since, I do mostly landscape, portraiture and these 2 bodies I own currently fit the bill in my book.

5D:
familiar layout
lighter weight

1D:
better focus
robust build
heavier
8.5 fps

got to weigh which is more important to you

I have been considering the mkII myself, but I am going to wait a few months to see if Canon drops something new to replace it.I heard from a guy who lectures at our school that a 1ds replacement is on the way,so a mkII should be too.

2 30Ds and a 20D should sell for close to the cost of a 5D, so the "BOTH" option does not seem out of reach if you are allready considering an extra body.

The way I see it, a 5D with a 24-105L would be a nice, lightweight travel camera.
I would have bought a 1D MkII N if it didn't cost so much more than a 1D MkII (which I bought instead)...

1D2N, only because I have one. Don't want to pick up a 5D as I might like it too much.

Samnz, see you're in ChCh. Ever popped over here to say hello. Couple of other members there as well. https://photography-on-the.net …ead.php?t=131484&page=986

Too bad you couldn't make the poll so that 5D and II N owners couldn't vote. ;) I guess they did already, but since the price difference is significant, some may have "settled." Althoguh the more I read about the 5D from owners here, the more appealing it appears.

why is the 5 d Not faster? sensor size??? for me, thats the deal breaker and I dont really use it on my 30D but its a great feature to have because the few times i did use it, it was awesome!!! id love to get a 5D though, i have seen some high ISO shots that were just amazing, plus I do alot with my 17-40L and it just cranks on a FF.

IDM2N is superior in most aspects to the 5D - build and ruggedness, AF performance and 8.5fps - the 5D has a slight edge in low light at high ISO and there are times that FF would be handy though.

When I was debating this in my mind, I really agonized over which model to get. The factors that tipped the scale for me were things like, 1) the rebate made the 5D a much better value than the 1D MkIIN, and 2) although the 8.5 fps would be nice on rare occasions, the FF sensor is nice on every single shot I take. As KevC stated, most of the time at that speed all you get is a card full of the same shot. I have no doubt that the 1D MkIIN is a nice camera, I would love to have one, but the advantages of the MkIIN just didn't justify the additional expense for me. I don't think I've seen anyone who bought the 5D say they wish they hadn't.

Im not sure if I have or someone else has asked but what sport(s) do you shoot? Because if you shoot just one sport then youll know that the season is only so long. Sports are seasonal, portraits, events, and weddings (not as much, often taken when the weather is very nice) can be shot year round.

I shoot:

- indoors: wrestling and basketball, hockey, and track
- outdoors: track, football, lacrosse baseball, soccer and rugby.

I'm still torn. I honestly see how I would use the features of each camera frequently. I'm always shooting sports at the school I work for Sept-June and events in the same time frame - not to mention the weddings, portrait sessions and other events I'm hired for outside my full time gig. Very tough call.

I really would love the speed of the 1D, but have been happy with results of the 30Ds with sports. So maybe the FF is the way to go...

Well if you shoot mainly sports then you need to get the 1dm2n.The crop factor helps in that case and the speed is important,as is the af.I just really like the pro style body of the 1d,by the time you get the grip for the 5d you will have spent the same.Plus you can shoot raw to one card and jpeg to the other, thats a big plus to me.The 1d is almost 3 times as fast (8.5fps to 3fps) as the 5 too, thats a lot of missed shots when shooting action.Plus the 1d has a 200,000 rated shutter whereas the 5 only has 100,00,you may never use it that much but it just shows that one is indeed a "pro" body.
