Are Canon hot shoe adapters on models different between cameras?

Reason I ask is that I have an old Bower 7244AFC Flash Gun, and I tried it on my sisters 350D and it uses the infrared sensor on the Flash Gun but the flash never actually fires

Now I then tried it on my D30, and it wont use the infrared on the flash unit, but it will fire the flash (albeit not overly bright, but also doesnt over expose the shot either (never thought to try it with the lights dimmed tho)

Have Canon changed the 'software' in the camera on the newer models to work with older flashes, or is it just a freak of nature that the infrared sensor works on the 350 and wont fire, and the opposite on my D30

a quick note, on an identical shot using the built in flash exp comp was -5

Canon 30D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 mkII
Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-5.6 USM mkII
Canon EF-s 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 II
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L
