Is a smart phone part of your normal work gear? I've been using one lately to keep track of my schedule and everything, plus they are great for showing off a photo every know and then!

I use a Palm Treo 650 and would be lost without it (phone, daytimer, email, web brousing, mp3 player, camera :D all in one)

For me yes it's normal work gear... but only because they are only phones around here supporting 3g. Otherwise I would be much happier with old Nokia without all this crap... at least they worked normal without need for everyday's resets. For all things you mentioned (plus few others including gps navigation and sending photos), I use pocket pc and not phone.

I have a Sony 990i which is a wonderful phone and general purpose device but I use my Creative Zen W for images because it is CF rather than MemoryStick. This is a much better phone IMO than the Orange Smartphone I had before ... so much easier and nicer to use.

I have a Nokia E61 with WiFi and other cool features... I bought it online since it is a Europe/Asia model - the USA now has a like model, but it doesn't have WiFi...

I'm looking at an EnV or a Blackberry for when I'm eligible to upgrade my phone.

I don't even use a cell phone (and guess what? I'm doing my PhD in an area related to wireless communications :p). I personally prefer to have my privacy. I have an answering machine at home where potential clients can leave a message if they want to reach me. I am well aware that I may be losing some business with this approach, but it's just a part-time business for me and I do get the bookings I want.

I live by my Blackberry Pearl 8100 paired with none other than the AMAZING new Jawbone Bluetooth headset. If no one has checked out the reviews or heard of the new Jawbone headset, you HAVE to. Noise cancellation is UNREAL, I tested it out by having the tunes VERY loud while talking to someone and they could FAINTLY hear the music.

You can actually watch a demo which is very true now that I own one and know on there site http://www.jawbone.com (external link) .

.....and no I don' work for Alphi

I have been using a blackberry too and find it invaluable to keep in touch and answer queries quickly. A number of clients have commented on the speed and quality of communication, as well as accessability too.....all that is down to the Blackberry!

Recently I have been trying out a T-Mobile Vario 2 (HTC TYTN is the same model) which also acts as a super 3g modem for my laptop. Whether or not it replaces my blackberry fully I'm not sure about yet, but in terms of connectivity, performance and organisational ability I can't fault it.

Another interesting piece of software that I have been given is Phojo - an application that enables you to plug a memory card into the pda, crop and caption and then send the picture. Its used by a number of press togs over here. I haven't had a chance to try it yet and can see limited application for it in the sports work that I do, but for anyone who does predominantly press work, I could see it being invaluable.

So, to answer your question, yes I do use a pda! (sorry for random wibbling in the middle there, got carried away!)

You are in terms of the 3g side of things......but then again, don't you guys have wi-fi access points all over the place?

Think we have had to push the 3g side of things since our governments and local authorities have been so hesitant to push the button on largescale wifi projects until very recently.

I may well be wrong on this, so if someone who knows what they are talking about can correct me, then please feel free!!!

we don't have largescale wifi. we do have many places that offer wifi access (a lot of it is free), but it has to come for a hotel, or coffee shop, or library, etc.

I have the PPC6700 from Sprint. I couldn't survive without it. I have 5 jobs, 4 kids (2 playing sports) and a wife. I replaced my iPaq with the phone and don't regret it at all. I keep reference material (paramedic) on the SD card as well as pics of the kids and songs to listen to when I'm bored. I have Outlook that can be sync'd with my laptop and my wife's iPaq. That way we're on the same page. I have the same office programs on my phone that is on my laptop so I can type something up and all machines can read it. It has built-in wi-fi which is nice. I can also dial into Sprint's data services and can get online and check e-mail. I've even taken a digital picture from the phone at the scene of a auto accident and beamed it to the printer at the hospital and the doc could see the damage of the car.
