Atomheart, nice shots mate! Interesting to be using such slow shutter speeds (on the active birds)... shallow dof is great tho, so is the sharpness at this slow sp. Did you use extension tube?

Thank you guys! Yes #2 is one of my favorite shots of my photography career. No extension or teleconverter here. The two hawk shots were at 1/1000 if I remember (on my iPhone right now). I wanted a little motion, and 1/1000 seemed to do enough freezing and enough motion blurring on the wings. Wish I had a little more depth of field on #1 but the moment goes by so fast, there's just no time to correct and try again. At least I got his face in focus. If I had that moment back, I'd probably have chosen 1/2000 and a bit smaller aperture. I just tend to get seduced by the contrast and 3D feel of ISO100.

The owls were really just sitting there, so no need to go overboard with shutter speed. Besides it was just after dawn and wasn't very light out yet with those guys as they as in the shade of trees. The peregrin falcon was put on that rock by his keeper, and I just wanted a dynamic shot with motion as it flapped and settled on the rock. Was just happy to keep focus locked on his eye, and let the shallow DOF and slow shutter do it's thing.

Here are some other shots of these owls that have really nice backgrounds with the shallow DOF.
