so I've solved my lens perdicament and now it's onto flash.

I'll preface with application of the flash...new age fashion/grunge look.

Now, what would you guys reccomend, the 580ex, or the alienbee's ringflash? Is there anyone with the ABR800 with input? Also, I understand the versatility and mobility of the 580ex, but I am in love with the look of the ringflash.

and while in this debate how about the 480 vs the 580?

here's the sliding scale,

alienbees=me broke as usual drinking high life or bottles I find in the trash

580ex=me with some cash so i can have guiness and sushi

480ex=chugging Goldschlager and eating in restaraunts with waiter's that don't know english

if you're into fashion and the look of a ringflash, i think you made the right choice.

that said, a speedlight is always useful.

Personally I think everyone should have atleast one speedlight. Even if its just a single 430ex. You never know when you are going to need portable easy to use ETTL type of lighting.

Alien Bees are also a blast to have.. lots of power but you also need (should have) a light meter too.

Right now my lighting consists of:
580ex
MT-24EX macro flash
(2) AB800
(1) AB400
