I have a Canon 28-135mm IS USM, and just got it in the mail yestarday. I just noticed today that i can hear a humming noise whenever the IS is turned on, and i just wanted to make sure this was normal for all IS lenses. I didnt notice it until today, but most of my shooting yestarday was in a loud place, so i dont know whether i missed it or not. This is my first lens and camera, so i obviously have no prior experience, and just want to make sure everything is okay...

thank you

All IS lenses hum a little bit when the IS is engaged. Some are softer than others. The 24-105 hum is very quiet, but on the 70-200 and the 100-400 it's definitely there.

On the 17-85 it is there, but very, very subtle. I need to pay attention to hear it acutally. I took me awhile to realize that the IS was making bit a noise.

Normal. You will easily hear it in quiet, indoor conditions, while outside in the wind or in traffic it is inaudible. 300/4 IS is noisier than 24/105 IS.

Sorry to resurrect, but I just picked up a 28-135 IS USM.

It distinctly makes a short buzz sound even when I'm not focusing. I switched to manual focus and it still does it occasionally. Is this normal for the USM?

I have a quick, more audible buzz sound like it's being energized for a split second.

It's nice to know I'm not (completely) crazy :)

My EF-S 17-55 IS f2.8 makes a noise that is pretty noticeable.

Not sure if its just on L lenses but on mine its less of a buzz and more of like spinning a top on a chalkboard. Kind of like a very very very faint white noise, not so much buzz. 70-200 II is almost inaudible. 100L I can hear if I hold it up to my ear.

if you have a point and shoot...take a video of it...when i first got my 40D the lens was making a noise...if i had just typed that, everyone would've just said oh it's the IS go enjoy your camera...i posted a video because it didn't seem right...turned out i had something defective...it was like a ticking time bomb was in the lens...a constant weird ticking noise, regardless of if i was doing anything
