I was thinking about getting a super simple setup for doing on-location portraits for the newspaper. I have the 24-70 lens coming in soon. I want to do simple stuff like exposing for the background, and fill the subject.

Something similar to this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …dedTroughValue=397664_USA (external link)

Where you have the tripod and softbox setup to hold a flash. Obviously need a shoe cord, but the canons are really expensive for 2 feet! Need something longer.

Any reccomendations? I will be using a 420EX flash unit.

It's a good deal, 10% off for being a student. Do you suggest I remove the umbrella from the package and get a softbox instead?

I really don't know, as I never used a softbox and just ordered the Alienbees and haven't even used that yet. Actually, I am in your position - needing an upgrade from flash at on-location events and after listening to some of these forums I thought the Alienbees basic setup would be a good start and could be added to if needed.
Hopefully we will get some more input on this from some of the "Pros" here.

I love using my softboxes, but they won't work for every shot of yours. Your light setup can change drastically depending on what you're shooting. That includes what type of light modifier you'd need. When I bought my first two lights, I bought a softbox and umbrella for both. I didn't want to be limited. Granted, it's rather pricey! Just get what you can, so you're not limiting your potential. Nothing sucks worse than that.

Crashoran,

It looks like you're interested in something portable and versatile, for photojournalism.

Have you seen the Strobist (external link) blog? Lots of useful tips on equipment for the PJ on the go, without breaking the bank.

Thanks Curtis! I've read alot of that blog today.

After learning how to make a simple setup, will a 430EX do? Could I keep the 420ex as a second fill light?

Since the 420EX has no manual power adjustment, the only way to make it work usefully off-camera is with a Canon master (580EX, 550EX or ST-E2 transmitter).

If you're doing paid PJ work, a 580EX may be a worthwile investment. Otherwise, there are some very inexpensive flash units available that work great for off-camera use. These include the Sunpak 383 and the Vivitar 285HV, both sell for $90 or less.

This threadmight provide some insights.

Ok, so here is my checklist.

Bogen 3373 lightstand.
ST-E2 Transmitter
Medium softbox
Will this work for the shoe mount and softbox holder : http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ghType=categoryNavigation (external link)

Don't know what to do about the off-camera cord. Can't afford pocket wizards and I will need some length.

Am I missing anything? hehe
