I have a Canon 400D with 550EX and I have some money coming my way so I was considering upgrading to the 580EX.
Is this a worthwhile step as I have heard they are very similar as far as results are concerned but the fact that it is slightly smaller/lighter and recycles quicker is tempting to me?
Hopefully I would be able to trade it in at my local photographic shop rather than splashing out fully on it.

Has anybody else done this upgrade and if so what is their opinion?

Many Thanks

Darren

I have a 550ex and can't see a reason to trade-up. I'd rather put that money into glass, and see what the 610ex is (I just made that up).

I have both, and although the 580 is better it isnt worth changing to. Although the controls are much nice as well as the other things. I would spend the money on more glass or perhaps a 430 to use as a slave and that way you have a lighter one to take out as well when you dont need something as big.

I agree 100% with you, go for the 430EX and use it as a slave.

Thanks to everyone for the advice as I don't have a need for a slave flash I shall stick with my 550EX and I am now thinking of getting a 50mm f1.4 instead.

Would a 550EX master and 420EX slave still make for a good combination? I already have a 550EX and I might be getting a great deal on a used 420EX.

I wonder how long I have to hang out on POTN before I get as good as Ansel Adams ?

Of course it would. When slaving, you don't always need the top of the line.
