I'm trying to pinpoint a problem with exporting raw files to jpg and missing EXIF data.

In particular, my raw files from my 300D are lacking the focal length when exported. The raw file itself is correct, and Aperture reports everything fine and dandy... until it exports.

I've tried 3 raw files from different 300D's, same result. Someone on the Apple forums says his GF's 300D works fine, but I have not had a sample from him. I had a sample from a 400D that worked fine as well.

I'm using the latest updated version of Aperture and the latest Core update for raw support.

Has anyone experienced this? In particular, if anyone has a 300D and is willing to send me raw samples, I would greatly appreciate it.

Apple isn't very responsive unfortunately, so I have no idea if it's a bug or just something I've completely overlooked.

Thanks

A RAW image captures more information than a JPEG, and this also applies to EXIF data. When you export a RAW image file, you essentially flatten it (like in photoshop) and with that process you lose some EXIF information.

" And when you export your RAW images, Aperture also exports all of their associated metadata, storing the data in industry-standard XMP sidecar files. As a result, applications like Photoshop — and any others that support XMP files — can read the IPTC data and ratings stored in the sidecar. "

Well, the reason I'm asking is it just seems like more of a bug than anything. It's just simple focal length in my case. Every other raw file (from newer canons) seem to have worked just fine.

Although, I'm more trying to find out if it's only me or not.

When I export JPEG files to a Sidecar file (maximum compatiblity), my focal length is retained. Do you use an aftermarket lens or extension tubes? If so, the lens to mount contacts may be compromised, not transmitting such data.

well, I'm exporting RAW... with the sidecar file, it's fine. Aperture see's all the data fine. It's when I go from RAW->JPEG in Aperture that I start losing information. And I do have the "include metadata" option checked.

Throw a 350D/400D raw file (or 20D+) and it's perfectly fine.
