Hi there,

So what software do you recommend then?

I use ZoomBrowser to get the pictures from the CF card to my 'My pictures' folder. That's because I haven't found an alternative here, and it's ok.

However, for organizing and converting the pictures (I only shoot RAW), I think that ZoomBrowser sucks big time. For that reason, I use BreezeBrowser, which is a lot more convenient.

I edit pictures (levels, resize, USM) in PS Elements. I convert them to TIFF instead of JPG, which takes a lot of space, so I only do that for pictures that are 'keepers'. I regularly backup the CRW files to CD-Roms, deleting only those that are clearly beyond salvage (out of focus , over/underexposed beyond correction).

Best regards,
Andy

are you using a card reader or from the camera itself. If you r computer doesnt have a card reader... get one. Its a hell of a lot faster. and not a usb one. get one that fits in the front like a cd drive. If your using a Laptop, get a PC card adapter (Sandisk makes one , Staples $10). Both methods access the cards as if they were hard drives. Then use Windows XP to move the pics quick and easy. Format card in camera after transfer. If your getting too many CD-rs from backup, Get a DVD burner. A dvd-r or dvd-ram will hold over 6 1/2 cdrs. Saves space on the desk not having 1000s of cdrs.

The guy I deal with at my local camera shop has said many times that you should always stay away from the early production of Nikon cameras. Apparently, there were major issues with the D100 in the beginning, and all of them were returned to Nikon for repair. This is hearsay, I have no personal knowledge of this. But considering how fast Nikon had to respond to the Drebel, and the sleazy marketing tactic they used - announcing it just before Christmas to try and stave off the hoards from rushing for the Drebel, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the camera wasn't really ready when they had to ramp up production. ?!

Meanwhile, I'm still pretty happy with my Drebel - how 'bout y'all :) :D

I was a Nikon user for many years and have collected quite a few Nikkor lenses. When I decided to try digital, naturally I looked at Nikon. But after looking long and hard, I just felt that Nikon was behind the curve in digital photography. And I still feel that is the case.

Shifting to Canon was not easy. Aside from the fact I had no Canon lenses, the operating interface is quite different. But I got a Drebel and have been more than pleased with the results. Now that I also have a decent printer (an Epson 2200) I am even more pleased. I'm now slowly adding to my lens equipment and will eventually upgrade the body. I do miss the lack of a mirror lockup on the Drebel because I like to do a lot of closeup work and I think the mirror lockup is almost mandatory for that.

I suspect Nikon is having quality control problems but I also think their sensor chip and processing chips could use an overhaul. In addition to the uneven color situation, problems with moire patterns have often been noted.

Canon has a significant advantage in that it makes its own chips. And I also think the Canon 1D Mk2 significantly surpasses the pro level Nikons. The main reason to hesitate at that end of the price spectrum would be the existing lens inventory. Long, fast prime lenses are not cheap. If one already has some good Nikkors in that catagory, one is probably locked into the Nikon system for some time to come.

Well, well, I was on my way to Rite Aid to get a wireless earphone for my cell phone which I had recently lost. I decided to go to Compusa for a "better" selection instead.

Well, I get to Compusa and see the shiny digital camera section. They were actually doing a Kodak digital camera demo with official Kodak rep there and all. I waltz over and start clicking away on the 300D. Everyone with their point and shoot Kodaks, including the rep are glaring at me. They look at me with the mighty 300D in my hands vs their little point and shoot Kodaks in their hands. Jealous much? Just kidding. ;)

I really was just "looking." Really...;)
But armed with knowledge and encouragement from users on THIS board, I was compelled to pull out my credit card and then it happened. Credit card was scanned and then it was over. I am now in the 300D club!

Now to go and hook it up to my new iMac. OK, I'll hook it it to the Dell P4 if necessary. But Apple's new iLife is really amazing. I have a demo Photoshop CS installed. I'm going to play with that for now. Never used it before.
Thanks ALL for the most informative posts.

Nikon D70? What's that? ;) Nikon D70 and potential moire and color consistency problems... I'll leave that for the early adopters of the D70 to figure out. I have to go TAKE pictures with my NEW 300D and NOT worry about waiting for potential firmware upgrades if I had gone with the D70... :D :; :)

Congratulations. I think you made a wise choice. You are going to love your Drebel.

Thanks all. I took my first pictures with the 300D. Amazing camera. Huge upgrade from my Elph!
300D is very snappy and you can take alot of pictures in succession. I felt like Austin Powers as a fashion photographer, "Smile Babee and keep movin!" ;)

BTW- Do all your family members say they have become your guinea pigs since you got your 300D? :D

Yes, including cats, dogs, ducks, rabbits, goldfish and almost anything else that is cute, furry and is capable of movement. You may then shift to various vegetables and other foods which were scheduled for the family meal.

BTW- I can just go down the street to the local Compusa and get a 300D for $999 with lens. Or get on the net and hunt down the scarce few vendors and order a D70 for $1249 (Macmall, Ecost says "in stock.")

LOL! Seriously? Hard to get? I walked into my local photo-store last week to buy a 77mm polarizer, and the salesman jumped at me trying to get me to buy a D70 instead(!!). Well whatever, this is a _tiny_ city (10.000 people) in Norway, and this little local "photosop" had stocks of D70's, and had sold 12 the last week. I even held it and fired it, so the "in stock" wasn't bullshit either. But heck, I just wanted to drop that Nikon in the floor and say "ooops, hope you got insurance, now can I get my filter?" =D

Latest update...

Nikon seems to be having some major backfocus issues with the D70's. Owners are just now starting to realize they have this problem.
