Just kinda curious about this stuff. I need to choose a major but in a dilemna. I want to take something that I really like but after lots of watching, seeing, browsing of other people's work, I feel kinda intimidated as currently, I feel that my work isn't that great compared to them.
Should I just care less about this and just enjoy what I do?
I just don't want to deal with stuff everyday that I have no interest with it. I prefer something that I will look forward to.

But Hey, "the goal for working is to get cash isn't it? that's work." I thought.
Your opinion, advice, story, etc are worth a million to me. . .
Thanks

If I have to work it's hard to think I could have a significantly better job, but I would much prefer to be a gentleman of leisure, just do hobbies and travel. We all want to be lottery winners don't we?

Try things out, see what you like, go for that and advance. It doesn't always has to be about money.

Yes, I love my job and the people I work with.

Sadly, I might have to leave soon as my department is going through an outsourcing process. I want to leave before I'm forced into the indignity of having to teach an Indian how to do my job.

I don't have anything against Indians of course, just the company that's going to take my job and do a worse job of it.

I don't love my job, but I do enjoy it. And until I win that lottery (must remember to buy a ticket! :) ) I have to show up every day in order to finance my "real" life. I spent a lot of years climbing the corporate ladder and eventually learned that all that gets you is more work!

I answered yes. I worked for an airline for 32 years. I always said that when I quit having fun going to work, it was time to quit going to work. The last two years of my time there were not fun so I packed it in and now shoot full time. I love it.

Unforetuneately outsourcing is a reality of the times we live in. There is always someone around the corner willing to do our job a little bit cheaper. Kind of sounds like the emerging photographers coming into this market and willing to shoot for a fraction of the price.

Life is too short to be stuck in a job that you don't want to get out of bed to go to. For 30 years I loved my job and the one I do now I love even more. Not a bad average I suppose.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I quite like what I'm doing at the minute. But it's not related to the degree I did, so don't get hung up on that. If you have a clear career goal, and it's something that you can directly study for (i.e. Medicine for a doctor) then you should follow that single-mindedly. Otherwise, go to university for a degree in a subject that interests you. Interesting stuff is always more rewarding to work at than dull stuff.

And remember to follow interests outside of your coursework. University is - in my opinion - more for having fun and growing up than it is for vocational learning.

I had to answer no because for the most part, it is what I do so that I can do other things. It is not my life’s interest but there are certain times that are really fun and challenging. For the most part I have to deal with the grind of product development and product test. I have been doing it long enough where it is no longer interesting, but it pays the bills and puts enough aside so that when I call it quits, I’ll be able to dive into the stuff I really do enjoy. But an engineer who also is into photography, I get to put together product manuals shooting with our 5D and assortment of ancillary stuff that’s really fun. I could do that for a living and enjoy it.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
