True, most users won't. Obviously, there's lots of other advantages (already mentioned) like control - but this was the quickest way for me to get the point across about the difference. It worked, too. *shrug*

If your pictures are "no better than theirs" with their teeny-tiny rubbish sensor, then you're doing something wrong!

I mostly tell them that it looks really Cool!!!! :) ;)

Most of my friends like to just start arguements about things that they really don't care about anyway just to see what kind of a response they can get out of someone so I don't play into it.

Its a Model wannabe magnet!!!

Just as idiots think you're a Pro holding that big DSLR others too will think the same. So who cares what your friends think. One day they'll ask you to shoot their wedding or their kid's wedding. So who's got the big gun there???

For those who like to rattle off a bunch of fancy specs to your P&S friends - do you really think the care about any of that, much less know what it means? I have told some friends what my equipment can do. I can see they lose interest fast when I start describing it. In the end, it's about the pictures. I have seen P&S pictures that look every bit as good as an slr picture - including my own.

My answer - It's a hobby.

Most people usually compliment my camera and are surprised when I say it is just a hobby. I also don't argue with people who don't get it, because they never will.

I also want a high quality P&S just to keep with me at all times. You might not get the 'best' photo, but then I wouldn't completely miss some opportunities.

You would most likely be wasting your time trying to explain the technical merits of your gear to a non-camera person. But, most people have something that they are pasionate about, so explain it in terms they can understand. Like, why did you spend $4000 on a bicycle, or, you paid HOW much for that tv? That will usually get their attention and shut them up.

My P&S is an Image Stabilized 6MP Canon SD700IS! It has it's limitations, but it's nice to have when some idiot on the highway causes a wreck, switch on the video and voila, DVD quality movies! :)
Ask em how their gym pictures came out at the basketball game, the night shots of their brothers wedding, compare a picture from theirs at 200 ISO to yours at 3200 ISO! :)
Yep, control, being able to vs. not being able to (Get the Picture)?

Well, it just comes in handy sometimes! While I WISH I could always have my 5D around my neck, it's simply not practical.

I just tell them the honest truth, that the DSLR offers much more flexibility and control over things.

Unless the person I am speaking to is a complete idiot, they usually understand.

I don't go on a rant telling them how much the DSLR is "better" b/c that's not relevant at all.
