Guys,

i am in the market to upgrade from my PC and get a Mac .. now, the question is .. which MAC ? iMac or MacBookPro ? of course the obvious is known .. but what about speed and stuff like that ? will an iMac work faster than a MPB ? or its pretty much the same ..

the reason why i want to get a MAC is basically for photos and once in a while videos ... but i am in no means a pro so i dont have alot of work except for my goofing around taking pictures ....

so guys .. what do you think ?

Well an imac is an desktop, so you cant transport that around much, compared to the macbook pro which is a laptop and is portable. would you be travelling around and using your macbook pro ?

we have the imac G5 and the powerbook g4 (never any probs in 2 yrs). My son has the macbook pro (for 3months)...he's already had to have warranty service on it because the motherboard died. Then there's some issue with the paint rubbing off...he hates it. My vote is for the imac :)

theres only a small difference in speed if they are speced the same. I plan on going with a MBP and external monitor and mouse/keyboard, till I can spring for a macpro to replace my PC for main editing.

I have a MBP and I use an iMac fairly regularly-- I really like both, and when I upgrade my PC I'll replace it with an iMac I think. So that's no help at all, but both run very well.

The iMac would be my choice for a desktop machine. The MacBook Pro would be a great road warrior machine, but probably not so great as a desktop substitute.

I have the MacBook Pro, and I love it when I'm traveling, but at home, I don't have to restrict myself to a 17" display, so it stays in the closet. As Zilly says, the 24" iMac display is killer, and in image processing, you can never have too much real estate on your monitor. I currently have two two 23" Apple Cinema Displays connected to my Mac Pro, and that works very well for me.

One other thing......I don't much like the keyboard on the MacBook Pro, and I don't like touchpads either. I carry a separate Apple keyboard and mouse with me.

The good news: There are a number of relatively inexpensive items in Apples stores.
The bad news: None of them have CPUs.

One other option could be the following (I only assume this is as easy to do with a MacBook as it is with a Winblows laptop)

Get the Macbook Pro, and get a nice 24" LCD and Keyboard.
Make a Home "docking station" on your desk with the 24" LCD and Keyboard, and then yiou can still take the Macbook on the road

While your at it, for the desktop, set up a USB hub hooked to your Keyboard, Printers and some external hardrives for back ups.. Then one USB plug to your laptop gets it all attached when your home.

You should even be able to use BOTH the external monitor and the built in one side by side..

That can be done, but it's a pretty expensive route when compared to the iMac alone.
