It's a little late to be asking. Shooting a wedding with the kit lens is inviting disaster. If you have a 50mm f/1.8 lens or can possibly borrow a midrange zoom with an f/2.8 aperture, do it. You need something for low light, and the kit really isn't very good wider than f/8.

Then what kind of suggestions are you looking for? Don't take offense but the picture you posted is the same one that anyone with a point and shoot can get just by aiming at the scene and pressing the shutter. If that's all they are expecting, then you are ready.

If the friend knows your level of expertise, then go for it. I was unclear as to whether or not you were doing this for pay. Try Program mode, though. It gives you a bit more control.

Don't worry, no offense taken. I guess the advise I was looking for is how to make the photo not look like that with the equipment I do have. I am much better with outdoor shots.

If your friend is not expecting much then have fun and take lots of picures. Weddings are the hardest thing to shoot... Where you located? I would hate 4 them not to have some nice images... Maybe someone can help you shoot it for practice... or to get some advertisement or something...

1. Shoot in RAW.
2. Get Photoshop or something similar (you're gunna need it :))
3. Go to the 'Wedding Advice' area of this forum, put on a pot of coffee and READ READ READ.
4. Look at as many wedding pics on this forum as possible so that you can get some 'posed shots'.

If you can do 3 out of 4 of those things, you will set yourself apart from normal 'point and shoot' people or any nikon user :p

I'm sure your friends will cherish whatever you give them. The advise given here is great and should be considered to the level that you are able to provide for your friends.

My Sister-In-Law was married a few years back and I took plenty of photos (with a point and shoot camera) and they loved them. However, they also had a PRO shooting the event. I was just taking candids and enjoying the day and capturing what I could.

A link if you are interested: http://Simonian.smugmug.com/gallery/2443282/1/128141668 (external link)

I would not put myself in the position to be the primary photographer at a wedding. Way too many expectations for me. But, you know your friends and what they expect and I hope that you capture the memories of their union.

Regards,

J.Simonian

It went realy well! I am getting new upgraded photo shop monday, and I shot the pics in raw. They are a very shy couple, trying to get any romantic poses was hard, but I took over 200 pics. as soon as I get them all downloaded I will post. Hopefully by Friday! Thank you so much for all the advice. You can check out some of my other work at www.affordablephotographybytonya.com (external link)

Hmm, I dont get it. You asked us for advice on shooting a wedding but you've done quite a bit of photography previously, judging by your website. Now i'm confused. you've done weddings before. what was the issue?

I needed advice on this paticular wedding. Very low light, no room, glum looking group, etc. Plus I had gotten the new flash since the last wedding. as far as the pics on the web site what did you think? Be honest. I'm trying to learn, and to be honest, I think I will stick to portraits and family. No more weddings. As the main photographer anyway. I like the idea of being the back up with candid shots to learn more.
