I have had excellent results with Eclipse on my 20D and bought the similar Copperhill kit for the 5D a while back when E2 was the recommended fluid. I haven't needed to clean the sensor until now. The cleaning did not go very well. The moistened PecPad left smears on the sensor. I didn't have this problem with Eclipse on the 20D. I didn't have any Eclipse left to try, but it is on order now.

I was able to able to remove most of the smears by carefully breathing on the sensor to put some controlled moisture on the sensor. I know how risky this was but it was the best I could do at the time.

As a test, I put one drop on a clean filter to see if there would be any residue. There wasn't any. It is almost like there was some kind of oily film on the sensor that was being moved around by Eclipse. But there haven't been any image issues except for a few small dust bunnies.

I'm going to try the E2 again in the morning and see what happens. I'll use it on a filter first as a test. I'll report on the results.

Jeff

It sounds like your pad may have contacted some grease from the sides of the mirror box. Either that, or some mechanical lubricant may have fallen on the sensor, which you then inadvertently smeared with the pad. In other words, I doubt that the Eclipse fluid caused the smearing.

There are cleaners available to clean the smear, although I've never had to get any, so I can't say how well it works. See Here (external link) for one such product.
