A master of light

One way to learn about photography is to study another artist's works. It's not about what the equipment can do but what the photographer sees. Some of the truly artistic portraits can be found at the link below. I puzzled on each photo trying to guess his techniques of lighting, lens selection, medium (film/digital?), the color palette, the composition, the story conveyed by the images. The more I look, the more awed and puzzled I become. Perhaps you can help me by telling me what you see.

Very interesting work. The description of the shots list different cameras, film and digital. The lighting takes a page from the old masters, Rembrant, Titian, etc. If I were a betting man I would say the images are processed in PS to give the overall canvas/painterly effect that seems to exist in the shots. The tonality and texture of the skintones, while pleasing, border on unnatural. All in all I think the shots owe a lot to post processing. Just my opinion.
