well isn't this just great. my 2 big purchases were going to be spread out (I'm also getting an 8-core Mac Pro but was waiting for leopard.. went ahead and placed my order yesterday instead of waiting another 5 months, however).

now that I've made this purchase, it'll be a little while before I build up the money to get my Mark III... oh well, maybe by then someone will offer it below retail (probably a couple months)

That is correct.

Hi All - First post to this forum.

There is a link on Canon's site for educational purchases, of which I contacted to purchase the MKIII, 16-35mm 2.8 II, and the 580 EX II. A rep from an outside store replied with a full list of all Canon products available for purchase at a lower price than retail.

I was under the impression that as an employee of an educational institution, the discount would be available teachers, staff, etc.

BTW, after reading all the comments on this thread, I asked the rep about availability on the camera. He said sometime in the spring.

I can wait, but all these comments are stressing me out!

Given the logical marketing concept of "under promise, over deliver" I think that as we pass May 15, it is safe to say that something has come along that has changed the picture for Canon.

I am well aware that there has been no "promise", but I think that at the show in February, Canon thought that they would have it out to market in early May.

Most probable is that they have underestimated the market and want to ship a large enough quantity in the beginning. At least, that is my hope. They are very bright people.

Only time will tell!

More like "over hype, under produce".

"Logical marketing concept" seems to be an oxymoron here. Piss off your customer base by refusing to answer even the most basic questions at this point like MSRP and availability date? I bet if you call Canon USA right now and ask for the MSRP they won't give you a definitive answer yet. :( Time for Canon to stand up and say when they will ship to the US market.

I went to put a deposit on a mark III today and they still didn't know what the MSRP is but supposedly it's coming in last week of May and on sale first week of June from what I was told..They quoted me $4,999 but told me it is just a quote and if price changes they will adjust it..

Congratulations on the 8-core mac. Are you using Photoshop CS3? Would be interesting to learn the speed increase of your workflow with this beast!

Hoping Dabs.com will have more information regarding my MKIII pre-order next week, now that some U.K retailers are letting customers know that stock is incoming.

kobe629 - It would be really nice if it were to come on sale in June but probably not very likely to put a brand new camera on sale a few days after it's initial debut.

The Aussie responded to my request to re-post the image of his 1D3 box. I think he's pretty much done with people attacking him. This was his response:

"No sorry , to be honest I dan't give a damm if people think its a fake thats their problem, they can deal with it and move on.

cheers

david"

It's unfortunate, but I'm sure if I was in his shoes, after the roasting he got on DPR, I wouldn't be too eager to do much for anyone either.

I guess will just wait and see when it comes out..I am hoping what the sales person told me is true. When I spoke to a canon rep he told me the same thing in June and that was last week.

"On sale" is not necessarily the same as it is being discounted. On sale might have just meant it was going to be available and they will be selling them at that time. Maybe? ???
