Since delivery today of 1D MkIII I have only had a short time to grab some images on the sea front at West Kirby on the Wirral, this was a grabshot of a little girl playing on the front (the sea is behind her)

Firsts thoughts on the 1D MkIII are:

It has a great feel to it, the menu controls are mind blowingly simple to use,the 3" screen is very clear both in showing images and moving around the menu, shooting in Raw it produces 13meg CR2 files quite large but worth it I can see me buying 8gig cards as I shoot lots of sports stuff, the 10fps is almost embarrassing when you are near someone!

I am only going to load up one image in my short time using it today, in another forum a certain Aussie gent got heavily criticised for loading up a series of his first shots, I am not going to expose myself to that!

I will study the manual tonight with menu functions and custom options so I can get much better images than today.

First thoughts......its a fantastic camera and well worth the wait!

Brief exif data, 100-400mm lens, 400ISO,1250Tv,F8,Evaluative metering.......otherwise as out of camera

Wow, that is a superb "grab shot". I bet her mommy would pay for that portrait. Thanks for posting, you are one of the fortunate few with a Mark III. You are not the first to mention the good "feel" of the camera. I am looking forward to that.

At the time I was more concerned that her mother was going to get me arrested for trying to take images of children :o

Thanks for the kind words

Yep, congrats to all who have them, I am very happy for each of you! And yes, I believe you as their is no reason to believe otherwise.

MANUAL: I tried the two links for the pdf manual and got nothing. On one all I got was porn and on the other at the bottom left it mentions the M3 file and says it was downloaded 293 times but I don't see any link to actually download it. Hmmm.

OWNERS: So what is in the software package? Did they put the new version of DPP in there. I think the white paper said there would be an all new DPP with some new tricks for us.

For the gentleman with a source for one more camera sitting at some store... well, contact me and you will get the reward if I can get it there. Click on REWARD link in my signature for my phone number and all.

As I said last night, and believe me, reading my posts from last night is embarrassing. I was having a particularly bad day and night of back pain. Hard to explain, but when you live with pain 24/7 sometimes it actually gets worse than others. Last night was one of the bad one. I take extra meds and then I think I react sort of like when people drink, not as able to express myself well. I take both Vicodin and methadone. When I take more than a couple of methadones, they kill most of the pain, but also kills my thinking ability. So sorry if I didn't make much sense. I was trying to say, regardless of how much I want this camera soon, I realize it is more of an obsession than a need. I will enjoy my daughter's graduation even if I had to just take my old Canon Powershot Pro1 or even if I had to by a disposable camera. It will be a thrill of a lifetime. The next biggie will be when she marries, nothing in the works for that so it will be years probably. Here is a picture of my pride and joy, Kirsten, UCSD Class of '07

Well Chris, I am so glad you had a wonderful birthday which included your new M3.

If I get an M3 or not, I am a lucky Daddy for sure. Kirsten is a great "kid" who is a good citizen, honest, ethical and everything one could hope for in a daughter. So I realize the M3 is just something I want and if I never got it for some reason, I'll survive. I am just a so-so photographer, and that is being generous, as shown by this picture with the tilted fence, poor set-up, etc. I am learning though at a pretty good clip thanks to many here as I constantly read their tips.

Thanks Chris for the kind words of encouragement. Heck, we're all adults and this thing has become like a must have toy and I was back to the age of seven. :)

Anyone else notice that Canon changed the web page for the Mark III:

http://www.usa.canon.com …egoryid=139&modelid=14999 (external link)

They got rid of the "Available Spring 2007", I guess a handful of people getting them means that they are available.

If you don't have the Mark 111, you will do just fine. My Daughter got a Doctorate in Psychology last Saturday (does the pride show) and I shot with the 5D. I spite of it's slow frame rate, I have about 35 -45 shots of her in every phase of the process.

As you say, the Mark 111 would have been nice, but that is not what it is all about!

Man that sucks. The early announcements from Canon priced it at $3999.00.

Well I got my first shots in today with the MK III. I did a few tests and it does seem that the MK III is better than my 5D for noise at 800, 1600 and 3200 ISO. There have been enough ISO tests that I don't think mine would add to anything so I'm not posting ISO test pics. Here were the bird shots

I checked with the local shops today Mike's Camera and Wolf, neither would say anything, Mikes is taking names and notifying when they come in and Wolf is taking names and credit cards (no deposit) and have about 4 people on the list already with no idea how many they might get.
