I was playing around with my 50L today. Nothing was running because of a broken rail in Thousand Palms, so I had this nice stationary subject to play around with. Unfortunately, is was too bright to do anything with maximum aperture shots, so I ended up taking shots for which the 50L is probably not ideally suited. Still, I thought they turned out pretty well. This one is typical.

Here are a couple 100% crops. I was pretty happy with them.

Looks kind of soft Chief...can you post a 100% crop of a 100% crop so we can be really sure? I think if that was my lens I would still have to call it a keeper.

I might want to keep this one secret from my heirs (you know who I'm talking about). I think I want to be buried with it.

Running or not, I like the shot of 5499 and its train. In the first crop (how do you define 100% crop?), I see an antenna on the roof that looks like it may be held on by a magnet, with its cable running through the window. What do you suppose that is used for?

I'm not sure in this case, but back in the days when I had a CB radio, I would occasionally connect with train crews. Maybe this guy has his own CB on board.

I define 100% crop as a pixel-for-pixel magnification of the image so that 1 pixel on the image equals 1 pixel on the display.

Looks kind of soft......

I thought so too with respect to the cropped shots. What was your shutter speed, and jpg setting? First shot is beautiful BTW! Great shot of the train and interesting background.

It was f/11, 1/400, ISO 100. There was no sharpening in the images, and the JPEG quality was 7.

I think taking it with you is the way to go...I am pretty impressed with the level of detail in the crops...hell, I am amazed to be able to read the caution tag in a web jpeg.

It looks good to me, but confirms my opinion that "Train People" are differently enabled? Going to a location to test a f/1.4 lens, which should be sharpest @ about f/4, in the sunlight? Most rational people would just step out their front door in the evening? ;)

Life is never that simple. The only time I can go out and shoot is when my wife is suitably entertained somewhere else. On this day (and most others) she was at the local Indian casino. Unfortunately, she always manages to get there late morning. I would love to be there early in the day, and someday I will.

Also, this is a little over a half hour drive from the house, so there's no 'stepping out the front door.'

Anyway, I'm pleased with the lens. Everyone is saying it's real advantage is between f/1.2 and f/1.8, so I was well out of its optimum aperture for this shot.
