Still learning a lot in photoshop and I gave this picture another go. Took it a while ago, what do you think?

hey all, this might have been mentioned elsewhere in this topic, but im not reading 100 pages of posts:cool:

how many of you are using just one light source?

...because i got this result from just one flashgun! It was pointed down through one layer of paper in a small lightbox - i'll get a pic later.

NB i adjusted the curves a little as i didnt get the wb quite right.

Jon

Great shot Jon. I was thinking about taking a photo of my swiss army knife.
I'm using 2 shop lights one on each side and my 580EX II.

Hi guys,

My first attempt at a lightbox and my first effort at using curves in Photoshop too (I am sure that it shows!) Your comments are appreciated / welcomed / needed (and yes I know I should have cleaned my lense first! LOL)

My setup comprises of a carboard box with 2 holes cut out on either side with the holes covered over with 80GSM plain white paper. The backdrop is two white pieces of 80GSM paper sellotaped together. (I really am cheap!) The light is being provided by 2 x 500W Halogen work lights coming in from the sides and the flash on my 400D. Lens taking the picture is the 18-55 kit lens and the camera was set on AV.

The camera specs for this picture were f/5.6, 1/20 s, ISO 200, 18-55 @ 31mm

I am rather pleased what with it being my first attempt, however something doesn't seem quite right. Again, any help would be appreciated. It's 5.20am in the UK now and I need to sleep, been at this for a few hours now!

I would try and clean up the lens a bit if you have the chance.
My sigma lens collects the fair amount of dust as well.
Quite the good first attempt if you ask me.

I've been doing ebay photos for a pocket watch reseller using a homemade box and also a tent I purchased on ebay. I use a velour black cloth for my background. My biggest bugaboo is trying to not get a reflection of the camera or myself, etc. in the shiney metal cases. Any suggestions on how to avoid this?

How about making a front panel for the lightbox, except with a hole in the front big enough for your lense and a little movement? That way you could play around with the angle and move the lense until it isn't in the reflection of the watch. You would also not get the reflection of the room behind you! Just a thought.

Jon

Wouldn't a C-P filter do this?

That would work. Using a longer lens from farther away would help, too.

No. Try it & see for yourself.

Just did, thought about it after I posted it, and didn't figure it would, never tried it before though on something that shiny at that angle.

Yeah, those reflections can give an interesting perspective. I saw a photo of an item up for sale listed as a Public Service Announcement about watching reflections in the objects that would be posted to their site. They showed a picture of a shiny teapot with a naked guy in the reflection taking the pic. :-)

Hey! Any idea where I can get a replacement lens hood for this lens? I lost mine. I know... try Sigma. Okay, now that that's out the way... Anyone know of a website that sells these? Got a link?

UPDATE: Found it. It was easier to find on the Japanese website than the U.S. one. Go figure. It costs $20 and is at the "Online Mall" section of the Sigma (USA) website, no link associated in the "Lens" or "Lens Accessories" area so I had to hunt and peck at the Online Mall.
