I posted these in transportation too for some feedback, so if some of you are getting a rerun, I apologize. Space 1999 Eagle Transporter 12 inch diecast model shot in the DIY lightbox, then tweaked a bit with some moon shots I took last year, and maybe a hint of photoshop

I don't know why but Hollywood gets it so that they should be dirty. See if you can color the ship layer to make it "less perfect".

stthomas2004 Member 69 posts Joined Jun 2008 More info | I made this post on another forum, but it was inspired by this one, so I figured I'd post it here, maybe help someone that hasnt yet made this cool invention. It's not perfect, but for a beginner on a budget I think it will do the trick.
Items required: 1 Large cardboard box Invisible tape Box cutters Several sheets of blank white paper 1-2 Halogen work lamps (available at Wal-mart for $9.99) 1 marker Tripod optional First blow any dust or dirt out of the box with compressed air, then lay it on its side. Place a blank sheet of paper over the side, either horizontally or vertically, its up to personal preference. Take the marker and trace the outline of the paper.
You want to cut INSIDE of the template so that the paper is bigger than the whole, and no light shines directly through.
Tape the paper over the hole on the outside of the box. Your inside shot should look like this.
Now repeat the process on the other side of the box, making sure to line up both holes together. Take a couple of sheets of paper (or a roll may work better) and tape them together (on the back!) and then tape them to the top of the box, making sure the paper forms an arc, NOT a fold. Now position your halogen lamp lighting into each side of the box. You can alter angles, or number of lights until you get the effect you want. It's going to take some time to get all your settings right, white balance, flash, angles of light, but its not that difficult to figure out. Here are some example shots (have not yet removed paper seams in PP!):
Now my box is far from perfect, and I've already come up with a list of improvements I'd like to make. My paper needs to either be longer or I need to coat the entire box in paper, as most objects dont fit in the sheet the way I have it now, maybe a roll of paper would do much better. Place paper on the top of the box to bounce more light around. Get different colored paper. Use a piece of glass to create reflections. My photos

I'm still working on it, these are kind of just works in progress yet. Thanks for the tips though! Double Negative wrote in post #5833354 ^ Awesome! Space 1999, how cool is that. I did something (sort've) similar a long time ago with a Lego model. I used black construction paper with pinholes in it and a light behind... Then panned the camera to get "star trails" as it were. I think I double-exposed the negative to add the ship, I don't quite remember. Didn't quite turn out as expected, but it definitely was fun. Thank you! I was wondering if anyone would remember the show Mike
