David

When I made my box, I did line the top of the box with white paper, but odly enough I didn't use it for my flash. I never cut holes in the sides of the box, instead used clamp work lights to clamp to the front of the box and shined them up so the light was very diffused. It has a fairly long exposure time though, sometimes a couple of seconds, but that's ok since a tripod is a necessity almost.

QUOTED IMAGE

Now that I'm getting back in to shooting product, much more seriously with an slr and slightly better equipment, I'm having one helluva time getting good, dramatic lighting on shiny surfaces like polished steel and titanium. Any tips on shooting metals (and often medal/wood or metal/synthetics) I would love to hear!

Ooo, P7M8, I've never seen one of those at the range yet, always wanted to try one out.

Using 2 kinds of light is what is throwing off the white ballence. The flash/floresent each are giving off a different color of light. Its very hard to get rid of both. I suggest eliminating the flash. Use just the flouresent lights. If you need more light, just slow down the shutter. If nothing is moveing it wont matter that it is so slow, But your ballence will be very easy to fix.

My first try:

flashram, are you using a UV filter on your lens? The color looks really washed out.

Other than that, a great start. might want to narrow down the aperture to about f/11 to f/14 and get some more DOF, unless that is the look you were going for. Also, maybe get the subject a little further back into the box to get more light on the front of the subject.

Actually yes I did have the UV Filter on now that you mention it. I will give it another try for comparison.

Thanks for the other tips as well.

I kind of like the color change, but the reflection is way to strong.
