I had some huge cardboard with a white backing, I folded each end approx' 2 feet , then I used a large Plant Shipping box , cut openings in the top and bottom, cvered them with sheer curtains from K-Mart. I used a heavy duty stapler to fasten everything, had the two light stnds for years. The lights are 100watt spots.. please advise as to what kind of bulbs I shoud be using.

Thanks for your info In2Photos, sounds like great advise to me.

You probably should curve (cove) that seam in the back for when you want to shoot something bigger straight on.

What you have seems to work OK, no? Cheap & easy to replace.
I use these alone, or as modeling lights with strobes:

You either have a different exposure or different WB for each shot. Remember that the same amount of light is falling on ANY subject you place in your box so your exposure should be the same. Also, the same temperature lights are being used so your WB should always be the same. It looks as if you are shooting outdoors which may lead to some problems with both exposure and WB. Try moving indoors where you will have less ambient light.

Probably just need to bump up the exposure a bit, or adjust WB in PP and see wht it results in. Even levels does wonders to whiten up your background. If you turn on "Image Editing OK" in your user CP, I'll show you the results of a simple levels adjustment.

This was done in Photoshop Elements 5
All I did here was Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Levels (or just hit Ctrl+L)
On the far right there is three eyedropper looking icons. Click on the one that has the white in it. Then click on your background. What this does is makes the background white, as it is supposed to be. Doesn't look like it affected the rest of the colors.

Result:

As Derek has shown you your problem is exposure, not WB. I would say you are probably one stop or so underexposed. Remember that you want the background to be as close to the right edge of the histogram as possible without clipping (approximately 2 stops over 0 EV). So use the background to set your exposure to around +2 and adjust from there.

Fabian9931: i tried a cwb on the white of the boards of my set up... but something is still not right...

If you want a black bkg, I'd move the bkg farther away from the subject.
For white, the CB looks pretty close, but for jewelery, I'd resist shooting a light colored subject on a light(er) background. It will just make the subject look darker in comparison. Look at this:
A few Car Lighting Tips
POST #30 NEAR THE BOTTOM: The gray bar at the center is the same density all the way across.

Faibian, are you shooting in auto (green box)? If so, I would get the camera into manual mode as soon as possible! Its not as hard as it seems, and will give you much more control over your exposures, which is vital in something like this.

I recommend, as do most of the people in this forum, getting the book "Understanding Exposure". This book is amazing and will help you get the most out of your camera. Its a quick and easy read.
