Why is it call "winning" on EBay when someone with the highest bid gets to buy the item being auctioned? What is it exactly that was won because the so called winner still has to pay for the item that he thinks he's won?

It's a competition.

Ever been to a live auction? Even been to one in Chinatown?

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

"The one who dies with the most toys wins!"
Whenever I see a prestigious auction on TV, like some high falootin' crap sold at Christie's, when something sells for a lot of money there is always applause after the auctioneer strikes the gavel. I don't know if the applause is for the buyer or the seller.
E-Bay wants you to feel good about spending too much money.

Re: Why is it called "Winning"?

Because you won an auction over a group of people with less money or more sense than you?

*shrugs*

With any half decent camera gear on eBay the 'winner' seems more like a 'loser' to me as they almost inevitably pay over the odds ... but that reality doesn't encourage more customers to join eBay.

Better to be a seller than a buyer on ebay, i think! That competitive urge to beat the other bidders is very unhealthy! It can be very hard to maintain perspective.

another thing is that the feedback system encourages people to make purchases initially, in order to build up a good reputation on ebay - so you can buy and sell even more rubbish!

I have boxes of decent stuff to eBay before I move house and I just can't be ar*ed to do all the shots and adverts ... maybe I should think of it as a few hours work to enable me to buy that 70-200mm 4.0 IS L I have been thinking of :-) but I don't really need it for another 6 months when it'll be cheaper anyway ... why do today what you can put off until tomorrow ;-)a

You getting all philosophical on us Leo. :D:D:D

There are times when I have bought things on eBay and then got what I had "won" and then really wonder what the hell was I thinking.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.
