The more i use my camera the more i stay in munual, maybe my crama is just a fruit but AV mode leads to soft images, and often under exposed and TV also seems to lead to under ex. images.

Thus i'm always in manual, just wondering if i'm normal.

I use one of AV/TV/P/M depending on what I am trying to achieve.... I guess I use TV most as I spend most of my time shooting motor racing and want to force a shutter speed in order to get that "almost frozen motion" effect leaving just a bit of blur to the wheels so that it doesn't look parked.

I'll put "Av" since that's 70% of what I do, 25% Tv, 4% Manual, and 1% of the time I just hit the button without looking because I forgot to reset it from the last shot.

Most of the time Av, because it gives me control over the depth-of-field. I often use it in combination with exposure compensation, either + or -, depending on the situation.

Sometimes I use P and M modes. I use M with flash sometimes, because I want to control the depth-of-field and I don't want the camera to use a long shutter time to capture ambient light (which is what happens if you use flash in Av mode). When I use M mode with flash, I set the shutter speed to about 1/60.

I almost never use Tv, and I've never made a single photo on full auto (green square) or the other "dummy" modes. I'm always shooting in RAW, and those modes don't even let you use RAW.

timmyquest, if you get soft images in Av mode, it's probably because you're stopping down the lens so that the camera needs a shutter speed that's too slow for handholding, and you'll get motion blur.

When in manual does the meter tell you if you're under or over? Have you tried +1 EC when in Tv or Av?

Seems weird to me that Tv or Av would do that.

Timmy,. I edited the question to ask "which mode do you use The Most" so it was easier to answer. :)
***************

I use "P" about 40% of the time,. I find that with both "wheels" I get the same control as I would get with TV or AV... with added simplicity when I'm rushed.

I use AV and TV about 25% of the time for each, depending on the situation.

I use manual about 10% of the time.. but the requirements are pretty specialized fro me to want to go for manual. (long exposures etc..)

ohh, so some people do use P then ??

I am AV most of the time unless for to sport photo. By the way canon could get rid of all those useless program mode on the 10D (since there is a 300D now). maybe keep the dof, it is somtime funny to play with.

by the way timmyquest, how can the use of AV make pictures soft? ? ? ?

Now why did you not mention that before - never dreamt of wheeling in P mode.

Interesting article in mag last week where pro admitted that he leaves it on Tv ALWAYS

I use M mode most of the time. It forces me to think about what I need to do and helps me learn the camera better.

I gues AV the most (for landscape shots) but I'm always clicking that dial about in the "creative zone", all depends.

I'll even use the green rectangle mode if I've had a few drinks. Easier that way.

Cheers

Ian

I'm still just trying to get a feel for my new camera right now, so I've been shooting a lot in "P". However, I've also been experimenting in all different modes and using different features. :) I love this camera! :D

Just an added note,. personally,. I find that AV, TV and P are almost the same thing.. since they are all universally adjustable..

The only difference between TV and AV onbviously is which factor (aperture or shutter speed) is the one that is adjusted by the camera to maintain exposure.

With P again,. you still have total control,. even with exposure,. because there is allways compensation available... but,. since the Camera is trying to make the decisions,.. in difficult situations you find you have to overide the cameras choices far too often,. that is when I usually switch to AV, TV or Manual.

Why do I still shoot in P?

Beofre owning the 10D I knew Nothing about exposure,. shutter speeds, etc..

It was the 10D that taught me,. so to this day,. I still like to see what my "Mentor".. the 10D, thinks of a given situation,. before I decide what I think is the right choice.

As I say,. in P,. all I have to do is spin the wheels to get whatever setting I want
