I had a little bit of a disaster with my Sigma 10-20 and not sure what to look for to dertermine if it's working the way it should.

I had the camera with the lens attached onto the tripod while walking across snow and ice. Before I knew it I slipped and fell forward. I went to catch myself, and of course the camera and lens was the first thing to hit the ice.

AF and MF are working, but not sure what else to look for to determine if the lens is ok or not. Need help please.

Thanks for your time...Frank

put those images on the computer and compare them to the pre-fall pictures at 100% or even 200%...see any difference?

also, are the switches still movable and the connectors still working fine with the camera? is the front element dislodged at all? are they're any scratches on the lens?

if not, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for your quick response.

Haven't tried your first reccomnedation yet, but when I do, what is it that Im loking for in the image?

Switches are all working, the front element seems to be in the right place. There are no scratches on the lens because it took the hit on the side of the hood. Connnectors are working.

Basically, take pictures with it. Compare them to pictures you took pre-fall. If you really don't see any differance, the lens is fine.

Unmount it, remount it, manual focus, auto focus, zoom in, zoom out, take pics, download pics to PC, view pics, if they look OK then carry on. By what you've said so far it sounds like your fine. Oh yeah check exterior of lens for cracks. Camera equipment is tougher than people give it credit for.

you basically just need to check for differentiations, like focus. the only thing that might be different is a piece of interior glass that maybe got dislodged - it'll look blurry (ier) that it used to. but if the hood took the fall, I have doubt of such - the hood should have absorbed a lot, and not to mention, a fall doesn't mean the end in all circumstances.

good luck!

All of the above are good suggestions, I had a similar accident shortly after buying my 17-40. It dropped from tripod height onto wet sad with a loud thud. I did a visual check to make sure there were no dings, cracks etc. Visually checked that the lens zoomed and manual focused as normal, and that autofocus worked. I had shot a handful of images prior to the drop, so I shot similar shots to confirm that everything was working alright. I then proceeded to do the rest of my days worth of shooting.

They are pretty tough lenses, my bloody kitten managed to knock mine on the floor the other day, the focus ring makes a slight squeeking sound during auto focus now but otherwise i haven't noticed any difference mechanically or in the pictures, I was quite relieved!

better a little squeek than the whole thing be busted.

if you say it took impact on the hood, I wouldn't worry about the lens too much. I'd worry more about the camera personally.

Guess that's why they say never transport/carry and tri w/ camera mounted still. Live and learn I suppose.
