I received my new 5D Friday and have been reading the manual so I can get as much out of the camera as it offers. With the 5D being my first DSLR there is allot to learn when it come to knowing how to use the settings on the camera. In the past I shot with a Hassy 500C and for 35mm a Nikon F2, so far the 5D just seems pretty much like any other 35mm film camera that I used in the past. I know it has allot to offer but I still wondering if shooting with the 20d or 30d is that much different form the 5D (since the 5D cost so much more). I plan on taking it out today to test it out some more.
The lens I received with the 5D is a Canon 28-135, what I noticed right away it the lens barrel seem clunky and loose, if you tilt the camera from one side to the other you can hear the lens clunk, I never seen a lens have so much play in the barrel especially when set closer to 28mm. Very cheaply made lens.

Good luck with your new 5D!
Shooting with a 20D or 30D would probably not be a lot different but the results would be.

I assume you have the 28-135 IS? If so, yes it is clunky but I believe it has something to do with the IS. Not sure it's made cheap other than it's a lot of plastic but look at the cost of similar IS "L" lense and you'll see it as a bargain. I own a couple L lenses and I still like the 28-135 IS for much of what I shoot because for a non L lens it's well worth the price and gives great results.

Yes, I concur. The 5D is a big step up from the 30D/20D. It has had an effect for me. Since the viewfinder is much brighter and bigger, I have had to learn to frame again. (Think about the shot). It leaves a lot at the sides and top and bottom which I needed to crop when I first go the camera. Don't be afraid to get in close and think about your framing. As far at the 28-135IS, I had this lens and it was fine on my 30D, but on the 5D is just doesn't have enough class. The 5D definetly needs "L" Glass if your going to get the most resolving power out of it. Or some of the nice and fast primes. 50 1.4, 85 1.8,
100 2.8, these lens look fantastic on the 5D. Have fun shooting, its an awesome camera, I just hope the next version has weather proofing and 5 FPS.

In terms of most of thehandling, controls, and features, the 30D is very similar. The 5D has a few more features but how the cameras work are pretty much the same. The 5D is a touch bigger as well.

In terms of image qulaity, I don't think you'll notice much difference unless you print bigger than 8x10 though.

As you'll find if you do any searching here, the 28-135 is not a well-liked lens, and (sorry) a clear mismatch with the 5D. All 28-135's are of wobbly/flimsy build, and the optical quality is variable to say the least.
Obviously the 'L' route is the way to go if you have the moolah, but with your 35mm background you'll know of a slew of Sigmas and Tammys that can see this budget lens off comfortably.

5D isn't much different operationally speaking. Same controls. Same menus, etc...the 5D is missing the various P&S modes since that's not its target audience. Missing flash is another obvious one...same reason.

The real difference is in the resulting image!
