The shutter lag is far less than the G3 and the focus is better. I guess it still would not compare to the 10d is this regard. So far I don't find it a problem as I did (and you also with the G3). I also took some inside shots this morning and found it focusses a lot quicker and more accurately than the G3 in this sitiation. Find one and have a play with it.

Here is a pic I took this morning with the Pro1.

No Pro1 yet =(....

I've checked around for it, but as far as I can tell, Canon is last to hit the ground running with its cameras.

:(

Maybe I should just order my Pro-1 from Australia ;) hehehe

Hey question, does anyone know the exact timings on shutter lag for the G3 and Pro-1? I read the Pro-1s somewhere but i don't remember... but can't find any documentation on the speed of shutter lag for the G3...

anyone have any ideas?

Do Kangaroos now carry Pro-1s in their pouches? ;)

According to DCResource the Pro 1's shutter lag is between 0,6 and 0,8 seconds, and that of the G3 is "well under a second" ?!. DPReview times the shutter lag for the G3 at 0,8 - 1,0 (Wide angle) and 1,1 - 1,5 (Telephoto).

Well, your first challenge will be to find a 10D, and even then you won't improve that much in size and weight over the 1D. Your next challenge will be to find a Pro 1, but if you do manage to get your hands on one it will bring a big weight and size advantage over your 1D or a 10D.

Since each camera has its own usage realm, the main question is what you want to shoot on your trip. The 1D and 10D will have speed and ISO advantages while the Pro 1 is undoubtably a compact power package that gives sharp pix, 8 MP cropping options and versatility. It is not a low light wonder, so you will have to do the usual work arounds. I have only had mine since Tuesday, but I already know it's head and shoulders over a G3 or G5. I find it's performance quick, efficient and a pleasure. The kind of camera I would like to have with me anywhere.

Germany and CZ are rather gray and rainy this time of year, so light isn't so bright and pretty diffused, so light will be a factor for you. You can always bring two cameras and leave one in the hotel depending on the weather. But I would want a Pro 1 in any case.

Not considering the 300D? It is small and lightweight. And you have lenses already.

thanks

dig rebel vs. the pro?

one of the other contributers had suggested i look into the rebel. i have and still have not made up my mind. aside from the 2 extra mega pixels (which in my mind IS a big deal) what other bonuses does the pro have over the rebel...
thanks

Size (primarily), zoom range, movies, some others. I would say that if size and weight do not matter to you then you should definitely look at the 300D.

I have to disagree with you about the importance of that 2 extra megapixels. Yes you'll get slightly more detail when you make very large prints. However you'll also get much more noise, especially with higher ISO. Don't forget about the CA and distortions too. In short the Drebel will give you much better image quality, even though it has a lower megapixel count. (Don't fall into the marketing trap!)

Given you have the 1D, you might not like it that much...

I think that coming from the 1D, you won't like the feel of any G series model too much. The shutter lag is *considerable*.

What I absolutely do not like at all about the Pro-1 (I had the opportunity to get my hands on one in Japan last week) is the electronic viewfinder.

Go to a photo shop and try out a camcorder (or any other 8 MP digicam, e.g. Sony) with an electronic viewfinder. If you like that, continue to think about the Pro 1. IMHO, it makes composing a photo a joke.

I also had the possibility to compare the 'feel' of the 10D and the DRebel - it's no comparison at all.

I'd rather advise you to look into a 10D or a used D30 if you want to have a small alternative to your 1D.

Best regards,
Andy
