Hello all

I'am back again with a followup to my "One Hungry Osprey", series that I posted about a week or two ago; several images in that series showed an Osprey almost capture a fish.

I stated in that series, that I wanted to capture a group of images of an Osprey hunting and snatching a meal right out of the water; and that of course remains a goal of mine.

But I did manage to fulfill some of it by capturing a few :"Prey carrying", images. several of these images were shot under relatively calm to 35 knot winds, as well as under cloudy to overcast conditions.

Canon EOS 30D, Canon EF 500mm f4L IS with Canon EF1.4xII TC

2. After many attempts at capturing a meal our friend flies overhead empty handed to take a break.

3. I wish I could have captured our friend catching this meal. But this fish is biting our friend back in the slim chance that it might escape from those massive talons and powerful grip. I wish you'all could have seen this in the flesh, so that you could have observed the way our friends flight was being affected by the fish biting it's leg; He/she were struggling to carry this aggressive meal.

4. Here's another shot of "when your meal fights back", it looks like something is in our friends beak, possibly a chunk of meat from this aggressive meal

5. Here's another more typical "meal carrying", episode, however as our friend got closer I noticed how large that fish was; and I wondered how long he/she would be able to carry it. Osprey's have a habit of carrying thier prey with the head of the prey facing the direction that they are flying in; in order to make it more aerodynamic, which creates less drag.

Not only are they beautiful, but they're smart too.

6. Still carrying that fish, what a powerful raptor

7. But wait, our friend has touched down to take a break, keep in mind that by the time I spotted him/her and started shooting, he/she had flown with this fish for a long distance.

After a brief rest he/she took off again and landed on a small Island not far away, but too far for me to get any decent images.

Oh well, the capturing of our friend diving and snatching a meal, is coming, that's all I can say.

Thanks for looking.

Those ospreys can carry some really big fish. You'll get the swoop down grab shot eventually. Just keep at it. Great work on these.

Thanks morehtml, and Ephily, appreciate your comments.

I too was amazed, when I first learned of this habit of thier's, it's probably due to conditioning, "A long time ago, they probably carried thier prey any way they grabbed it, but then when they carried it head first, they felt less drag; so over time they began to carry it that way".

I love Osprey's, I had the chance to take pics of them last summer and really enjoyed watching them. You captured some great moments.
