Hi there all, I just bought me an S3 and my fiance an S2. I've noticed one thing that problems me. The movie files created by the camera's seem to cause my computer with windows to freeze up. I've looked through all of the posts possible and didn't see anybody posting about this. Is there something else I have to do? Is there something i'm doing wrong? I do take my card out of the camera and use a card reader to move all of my pictures.
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
I've racked my brains on this and can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks again in advance!

Do you use a copy and paste or use the included software? I've always used the built in windows program to automatically download my videos and they come out without a problem. How large are the video files you're downloading?

The files are big and small. But I noticed that there is also a file that starts out with a "THM". I think that these are the actuall trouble makers. The strange thing is that when I first got the camera, my computer didn't have any problem with these. Now every time that I open the folder containing those and the pics and video, my computer locks up. What I do is go into the folder, click on them to highlight them, and hit the "move to" button.

Gosh. My wife has a S2 and I have an S3 and they work perfectly with the *.avi files. But, we *do* use the cords that came with the cameras, and the Canon Software to download and install the files on the machines [we each have a computer]. Have you tried that approach? [I have wondered why anybody would NOT, it is so simple and 'goof-proof'...but I know we are all different]

CID, I'm not talking about the ".avi" files. I'm talking about the ".THM" files that the camera produces along with every video avi file. The avi files work fine, But when I open the folder containing the avi and THM files, my system locks up. It's not a question of "goof-proof", it's a question of why my camera creates those "thm" files in the first place. Nevermind, I'll take this to another forum.

Actually a lot of people don't use the canon software and the usb cable for their camera. First, I find that the canon software is really weak and not as intuitive as other free software out there (Picasa and faststone or irfanview) and using the USB cable uses batteries. I use a card reader since I have one in my computer and as part of my printer and use the windows software to download and re-name my photos. I think that goof proof is different to each person.

OK... just trying to help, since I don't seem to have any problem of any kind. Yes, there are those THM files in the folder, but using ZoomBrowser, they are never seen or are a factor in any way.

"To each his own..."

Best o'Luck...

THM are thumbnail files usually of the first video frame. They are for internal indexing only and not meant for viewing with media player

the "bad" thing about using card readers, is that you can "see" all the things that are actually on the card... (folders created by the cam, that you wouldn't see otherwise)...

Just for checking... Why don't download the pics in the "default" way?... That is, keep your card in the cam, connect the cable to the usb port... if "camera window" appears, you can even bypass all software, open the lcd, and then click the direct transfer button (the blue lighted one), and then your cam will start to upload all files to the pc...

That is how i upload my pictures/vidz, it takes almost no time al all (no browsing among folders on the card, no nothing... after that, zb starts and then i can arrange my files as i want).

Try that, maybe there's something about your method that's just not working properly... ;)

Greetings,
Canon S2 IS
