A friend of mine has a broken shutter on her original digital rebel. I was wondering if anyone knows if/and how much canon replaces the shutter on this model for. basically is it going to cost so much shes better off finding a new one.

I think I remember reading a few times here on POTN that the shutter repair is just not worth the cost...

I don't remember the amount though....I want to say roughly $200-$275...somewhere in that range I believe.

Obviously, this post isn't the most reliable info...but I'm bored at work and had to share what I read a while back lol.

I'm sure that you don't know, but is it the shutter that's broken or is it the secondary mirror (Canon calls it the sub-mirror)? That's the usual failure point on the original Digital Rebel (300D).

A failed shutter usually appears as a white arc from top to bottom through pictures. A failed secondary mirror manifests as either total loss of autofocus or as pictures with the bottom 3/4 or so being black.

Either way, a repair at Canon will cost around $200 plus shipping in the US.

If it is the secondary mirror failure, and the camera isn't worth $200+shipping to fix, and someone has the tools and the nerve, there are some people who have successfully repaired it themselves. But it's usually an all-or-nothing gamble; if you fail, you'll probably have broken the camera beyond economical repair.

Here are two links to DIY instructions for fixing a failed secondary mirror hinge pin:
http://www.lotek.nu …S_300D_sub-mirror_repair/ (external link)
http://www.clickondavid.com/Rebel_fix/index.htm (external link)

Critically important reminders for anyone going the DIY route:

  1. Never have the batteries in except when the camera is fully assembled. It's tempting to slip them in before final assembly to see if it works, but you can (and probably will) blow a fuse on one of the circuit boards if you do that. Take the batteries out as the first step, and don't put them back in until you're completely done.
  2. Pay attention to the warnings about the high-voltage flash capacitor. You will know it if you cross that sucker.
