I have a digital rebel 300D and I am trying to shoot infrared with a hoya R72 filter. Has anyone had any luck doing this without converting your camera? Thanks for any help!

I've seen some decent results from this kit, but expect quite long shutter speeds (or very high ISO settings) as the AA filter tries to block out infra red light and, as that is all you are trying to use, it can take a while to get enough of it.

Not sure about WB settings as IR is weird colour anyway and is usually heavily processed to get the colour required. I would suggest that you use RAW and then play around to see what you think looks best - realistic results aren't what you are after anyway, so accurate WB isn't an issue.

If you are also asking about adjusting WB as indicated by your thread title, there is no such thing with IR. WB denotes the balancing of the primary colors (red, blue and green) to get a neutral color. IR photography, by it's very nature, gets rid of those colors, except maybe a portion of the red color spectrum, with the IR filter.

Hi Becky,
you may want to read this paper a friend of mine and I recently wrote.

http://www.infraredphoto.eu/IR_Paper_Part_One.htm (external link)

It's in two parts. It is a bit of a primer on digital IR photography, but goes also into quite a lot of technical details (e.g., discussing chromatic aberration and focusing issues) and shows a number of pictures. It also deals with white balancing and whether the three sensors are in fact all sensitive to IR radiation in the same way. IR photography with flash light is also discussed.

We have been using a 1DsMkII with an IR filter, as well as a permanently IR-modified Rebel XT (350D).

Cheers

Marco

Hi Becky, I have an unmodified 20D and use it for IR with a Hoya R72. I use a custom white balance by taking a picture (with the filter on) of grass or green leaves and use it to set the white balance. If you have the capability to shoot in RAW, you can adjust it there. The exposures are generally 15-30 seconds on a bright sunny day.
