I do allot of sports photography and need the cont frames that the 5D has but other than that an dthe more pixs why is everyone going with the 30D? It looks like the 5D would be a better camera or at least on paper it looks better so why is so many using the 30D? is it the cost?

The 30D is a subset of the 5D.
Namely - all the features that the 30D has, the 5D owns. And much more.
[except its price ...]

The 30D has a 1.6 crop and the 5D is a full frame, so maybe people choose the 30D for the extra reach. Then again it could be because the 5D costs $1683.95 more

Roli,

maybe you look again at the 'frames per seconds'
30D: 5 per second
5D: 3 per second
... and review your statement

That simple feature is very important to most sports photographers. What does high frame count bring you if the speed is 40% slower?

The 5D is better in many respects than the 30D, but sports photography is definitely not one area where it is better.

Rather look at getting a used or refurbished 1DII or 1DIIn!

That should be available now for the price of a new 5D and will be 500% more useful to a sports photographer.

Plus, IMO a used 1DII should still be more robust than a new 5D...

Best regards,
Andy

The 30D will go 5fps, while the 5D only 3fps. 5D is full frame, and the 30D is a 1.6 crop (I think).

Different strokes for different folks.

You forgot the speed. 30D is faster. The speed and the price are the only two things the 30D has over the 5D. Oh and the 1.6 factor if that is important to you (i.e., bird watcher, etc.)

BTW - If I'm a Sports Photographer, I won't even consider a 30D, neither a 5D. I would go for a 1D-Mark-IIN [or the new EOS 1D-Mark III] - mainly for the Fastness & Accuracy of its AF.

The 5D is slower with fps but will shoot for much longer before the buffer fills up.

The AF is supposedly better on the 5D due to 6 additional focus points, I have yet to compare them myself.

Generally though for sports the 30D would be the choice over the 5D

No ... you correctly pointed out the (not negligible) difference in price

I understand that a 5D will feel like a dream to most 20D/30D users (that's why I have resisted so far trying one out  ) but sports photography is the one application where the 30D will actually be better ... for fps but especially because with the price difference you can get a nice 100-400 IS lens.

Best regards,
Andy

Little bump in price point there tho. If money weren't a concern I doubt many would consider the 30D/5D for any application.

I would for one as I hate the size and bulk of the 1 series
