Comparing external flashes

All,

I'm new to the G1 (to most digital photography, in fact); I'm less "pro" and more "sumer," if you catch my meaning. I've found the G1 on-board flash to be insufficient, as it seems most have, and I'm comparing external flashes.

The Speedlite 420 EX seems to be the favorite out there, though I've read some positive user reviews of the 220 EX. I'm trying to determine which way to go. I'm definitely not a professional, but have always taken pride in my photos and don't want to limit them by undercutting the technology. At the same time I'm trying to figure out if what I get (and pay for) in the 420 EX is stuff I'll really USE, or if I'm just throwing $$ away.

I do a lot of family and event shots, a lot of indoor. Few posed, mostly in-the-moment, frequently from experimental angles. I'm mostly just using auto mode but trying to get more confident and comfortable with the other modes.

Will I find the 220 EX sufficient? Or does the 420 EX have features that even I couldn't live without?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Go for the 420EX! It is the ideal match for the G1!
