An aquantance of mine just picked up a cheap set of hot lights and I told her to get a old analog meter from ebay. Any good brands or models to look for? She is a SUPER noob so it must be east to use.

If you do not need flashmeter function, then just about any Sekonic, Goosen, or Minolta meter would be fine. But be aware that many older meters have circular slide rule type devices to determine the needed settings after setting the position of the circular slider from the meters gauge.

Just make sure it:

  • Has an incident metering mode
  • Does not need older Mercury cells for power (Mercury cells are no longer available due to dire ecological reasons, and were commonly used in many older light meters and cameras).

Enjoy! Lon

Now that i think about it, since she has hot lights, she really doesn't need a meter. She could just use her in camera metering.

As long as she meters of off an 18% gray card. The camera metering is reflective, so it can be easily tricked under some circumstances. A cheap incident meter would remove any guesswork with hot lights.

The built in histogram feature in the camera (at no cost) would also remove any exposure guesswork.

Enjoy! Lon
