24-70/2.8L Hood on 17-40/4L?

Both of the subject lenses have the same size filter thread, but take bayonnet mount lens hoods. Does anyone know if the hoods are interchangeable? Perhaps someone who owns both of them can try it.

Here's why I ask. I'm considering buying the 17-40/4L, and would like to use the longer hood from the other lens.

The lens hood for the 17-35/2.8 is nearly useless since it is so shallow (to prevent vignetting). On a 10D, the effective angle of view of that lens (and other lenses) is much less than it would be on a 35mm film camera, so the lens shade could be deeper. Perhaps the hood for the 24-70 lens would be deeper and not vignette with that lens or the 17-40. There's only one way to know ...

Thanks.

Mike

I have the hood from a 28-70mm f/2.8 mounted on my 17-40mm.. I had to do a little trimming for it to work at 17mm.. but not a lot.

As far as the mounting part,. it just twists right on like the original.

I use the EW-83DII, which is the hood for the 24/1.4L, on my 17-40.

I use the same hood, on the recommendation of someone here. Its a little snug, but it works well with the 1.6 crop (and might work well with the 1.3 also, though I don't know this for a fact). Its got a deeper coverage than the 'stock' pie-plate hood, though it would probably vignette quite a bit with full-frame.

I've swapped the 16-35L and 24-70L and no problems yet, but that was for transit as I had a CPL on the 16-35L. I have yet to try it shooting, but it fits.

I want to get this for my 17-40L because the included hood is too large and unwieldy, but it seems to go for about $50.00! Expensive. Know of a cheaper source?

Thanks,

I just ordered my hood replacement for the early Christmas gift my wife gave me.

It definitely works on the 1.3 crop. I use it all the time.
