I dont think i have ever tried this in auto? how do i know its set to auto?
I always have it set to high speed sync, or is it literally turning this off and its set to auto?

You can use it in E-TTL mode or manual mode (or TTL mode with film cameras). E-TTL is the flash metering system that your camera uses.
