580EX flash on auto?

I dont think i have ever tried this in auto? how do i know its set to auto?

I always have it set to high speed sync, or is it literally turning this off and its set to auto?

Unfortunately, the Canon 580EX does not support Auto mode.

There is no "auto" mode on the 580EX. You can use it in E-TTL mode or manual mode (or TTL mode with film cameras). E-TTL is the flash metering system that your camera uses.

High Speed Sync, if enabled, will be used if your shutter speed is faster than 1/250. If your shutter speed is 1/250 or slower, having HSS enabled won't make any difference. HSS can be used in E-TTL or Manual mode.

Do you only shoot daylight fill with your subject only a few feet away?
