Could someone please confirm whether the 6 digit number on the base (near the mount) is the serial number or not (and if not, where is it?)

On the 17-40 & 24-70 lenses, it appears right on the flat surface of the lens mount, whereas on the 70-200, it seams to be on the barrel, again near the mount.

Thanks

TJ

On all my L lenses the serial number is located on either the flat metal area of the lens mount, or on the barrel near the lens mount. However, on the 85 f1.2L MKII it's a 5 digit number not a 6 digit number (that's the only variation I saw). On my non-L lenses the serial number is an 8 digit number located on the inner black ring of the lens mount (very faint and much more difficult to see).

Thanks Mark, that at least confirms that it is the serial number that I've been looking at!

Just a thought - do speedlites have a serial number printed on them? - or more to the point, does ALL (Canon) equipment have serial numbers?

My Speedlights have serial numbers (540EZ, 550EX, 580EX), but there are things that don't have serial numbers, I'm sure. These would be small, inexpensive items.
